The loss by the Oklahoma Sooners and quarterback Baker Mayfield this past Saturday now has the 2017 Heisman Trophy odds beginning to tilt from quarterbacks to running backs. Heading into Week #7 of the College campaign The World’s Largest Race and Sportbook has two runners topping their Heisman Futures chart. Saquon Barkley (3-to-2) of Penn State and Bryce Love (7-to-2) of Stanford are No 1 and 2, respectively. 2017 Heisman Trophy Odds: Running Backs Top Chart.

Heading into the College Football Season the projected top-10 2017-18 running backs (average of 50 college football portals):

  1. Saquon Barkley – Penn State
  2. Derrius Guice – LSU
  3. Bo Scarbrough – Alabama
  4. Kamryn Pettway – Auburn
  5. Ronald Jones – USC
  6. Nick Chubb – Georgia
  7. Royce Freeman – Oregon
  8. Justice Hill – Oklahoma State
  9. Justin Jackson – Northwestern
  10. Mark Walton – Miami

But to no surprise preseason projections are just that, predictions, without actual on-field production.

247Sports.com published an article on Who’s CFB’s best Running Back on Sunday. “The pecking order of running backs for the college football season remained the same following Week 6, as far as PFF College’s statistics are concerned. Stanford’s Bryce Love has a season score of 92.4 (on a scale of 1-100), with Penn State’s Saquon Barkley — the current Heisman favorite — right behind him at 90.5. Iowa State’s David Montgomery is third, at 89.6. The three fell into the same order following Week 5.”

The 247 Sports staff added “Love has quickly filled Christian McCaffrey’s shoes. The junior’s scampered for 1,240 yards already and is averaging an absurd 10.51 yards per carry. Saturday in a win at Utah, Love ran for a 68-yard touchdown, his eighth straight game with a 50-plus yard scoring rush. He’s got the highest “run grade” in the country. His only negative so far has been subpar blocking remarks according to PFF College’s metrics.”
