You can leave your rain gear at home for this one. Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming (4/5) is firmly atop the 2017 Preakness odds sheet at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, followed by Classic Empire (3/1) and Gunnevera (8/1). Saturday’s forecast in Baltimore is calling for partly cloudy skies in the mid-70’s. But will we see a race as good as the weather?
Prior to the Kentucky Derby, many horse racing analysts said that this year’s crop of 3-year-olds was not an impressive bunch. Most people interpreted that to mean, “There’s not a Triple Crown-worthy horse in this group.” But the narrative is slowly shifting toward, “There might not be anyone else in this group that’s good enough to beat Always Dreaming.” Leading up to the Kentucky Derby, betting “No” on a Triple Crown this year was -1000. Those odds are down to -600 heading into the Preakness. Six of the 11 expected participants in the Preakness did not run in the Kentucky Derby. That crop is led by Conquest Mo Money who lost by a nose to Classic Empire in the Arkansas Derby, and beat Bluegrass Stakes winner, Irap, in the Min That Bird Derby earlier this year.
