2021 College Basketball National Championship Odds

The eyes of the college sports world have been focused on the football field, but as we get deeper into August, the prospect of a “normal” college basketball season is beginning to look grim. The Ivy League has announced that it will not resume athletics until January 1 at the earliest, essentially cancelling the non-conference schedule for those eight schools. Teams are over a month behind in terms of finalizing their schedules for this season. For context, Penn State’s 2019-20 schedule was released on July 17 of last year. North Carolina announced their non-conference schedule in June of last year. We’re now into the second week of August, and there’s been no such progress for this upcoming season.

At the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, Gonzaga is now the 10-to-1 favorite atop the odds board, followed by Baylor (+1200), Villanova (+1400) and Kentucky (+1400). Other notables include: Duke at 20-to-1; Kansas at 25-to-1; and North Carolina at 40-to-1. The 2021 Final Four is scheduled to be played April 3-5 2021 in Indianapolis.

If you thought the College Football Playoff committee struggled to select its teams during normal years, what is this process going to look like in a shortened 2020 season?! It appears that most conferences will attempt to play a league-only schedule this fall, trimming their regular season from 13 games to ten. With no non-conference games to look at and with less data points to analyze, finding this year’s CFP participants could be a crapshoot.
