Westgate Championship Monday Big Dance Line Report
The No. 1 seed Virginia Cavaliers and No. 3 seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders are on the verge of making school history. Both advanced to the championship game on Monday night and one will earn their first ever national championship.
The Cavaliers have made 21 tournament appearances. Have survived and advanced to two Final Fours. The schools’ overall Big Dance records is 29-21. The Red Raiders have 15 tournament appearances. They earned a win in their first ever Final Four and own an 8-16 overall record in “The Dance.”
Top seed Virginia survived against No. 5 seed Auburn 63-62 on Saturday. The Cavs needed three free throws with 0.6 seconds left to earn the victory. In total Virginia’s pack-line defense needed a missed call and a shooting foul in the final 1.5 seconds to advance to Monday night’s championship tilt. The officiating crew in Virginia and Auburn missed a double-dribble with just over three seconds remaining before the Auburn defense used the final foul of the second half leaving the Cavaliers with just a second-and-a-half of clock time down two points.
The No. 3 seeded Red Raiders defeated No. 2 seed Michigan State 61-51. The Spartans were held to a season-low in points, field goals made and assists. In Tech’s five tournament games it has held its opponents to season-low offensive performances.
