Wagertalk horse racing expert Marco D’Angelo (returned $9,069 for clients on Kentucky Derby) has been an owner and breeder of racehorses since 1986 with over one million dollars in purse earnings. Below you will find his personal betting strategies and predictions for the 2017 Belmont.

#1 Twisted Tom

  • The good news is Twisted Tom is 3 for 3 as a 3 year old
  • Has a Top Trainer in Chad Brown and a Top Jockey in JJ Castellano
  • The bad news is he hasn’t faced Graded Stakes company yet
  • Will have to improve tremendously as his best Beyer figure is 78

#2 Tapwrit

  • Got to throw out his Kentucky Derby race as this horse generally likes to sit just off the pace setters in a stalking position and basically was eliminated at start of Kentucky Derby
  • Irish War Cry collided into Tapwrit coming out of the gate leaving Tapwrit to get away 15th
  • He did rally to finish 6th and considering the trouble at the start wasn’t as bad as it looked
  • Fresh horse having 5 weeks in between starts
  • Tapwrit is out of the great sire Tapit and should be able to get the distance here

#3 Gormley

  • Finished 9th in the Kentucky Derby then skipped the Preakness to shoot for the Belmont
  • Some question if he can get the distance of the Belmont but if the connections thought it was a problem they would of went to the Preakness instead
  • In the Kentucky Derby loomed up into contention 4th before flattening out in the stretch and fading to 9th
  • It must be noted that he raced the entire race on the outside which was the worst place to be in the Derby
  • Gormley has a big chance to improve here

#4 J Boys Echo

  • Disappointing 15th in the Kentucky Derby never making a challenge at any point
  • Does get regular jockey Robbie Albarado back up for this one
  • Owns 102 Beyer from the Gotham Stakes win but nothing prior or since has been better than 84
  • Has raced in 5 straight Graded Stakes with modest results

#5 Hollywood Handsome

  • 9 Career starts and has only raced in Graded stakes company twice finishing 5th & 4th and those were Grade 2 and Grade 3 races so looks over matched here
  • With his highest Beyer figure 88 doesn’t appear to have the speed needed

#6 Lookin at Lee

  • Only horse in the field to run in all 3 Triple Crown races
  • Finished 4th in the Preakness in a race I was surprised they went to as the shorter distance didn’t favor his preferred late closing style
  • The Belmont 1 ½ mile distance should give him a big chance to close if there is a honest pace early on.
  • In the Kentucky Derby he got the perfect ride from Corey Lanerie who is one of the best jockeys at Churchill Downs and now picks up Irad Ortiz Jr one of the best jockeys at Belmont
  • The two big questions will he get an honest pace and how much did racing in all 3 races take out of him but has to be used on ticket.

#7 Irish War Cry

  • On raw talent maybe the best in the field as he has 2 races with Beyer figures of 101
  • In 6 lifetime starts he has 4 wins but in the other 2 got beat badly losing by a combined 38 lengths
  • Those 2 bad races came in his last 3 starts
  • Expect him to be on or just off the lead as they head to the first turn
  • Don’t trust him to win but too talented to leave off ticket

#8 Senior Investment

  • Since adding Lasix last November has had 7 straight races where he improved his Beyer
  • Came from out of the clouds to finish a strong 3rd in Preakness setting his highest Beyer number
  • Peaking at right time and with the way he closed in Preakness indicates he wants more distance
  • He’s a player here

#9 Meantime

  • With only 4 lifetime races and only one Graded Stakes race a 2nd in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Meantime looks to be outclassed here
  • Should be the early speed with Irish War Cry which if they run honest fractions I don’t see Meantime holding off the closers
  • Picks up Mike Smith today but has had Ortiz and Rosario in last 2 so no improvement on jockey switch

#10 Multiplier

  • Biggest question is if he can get the distance his breeding suggests that a mile and ½ is too much for him
  • Is trained by a hot barn right now and has Joel Rosario up who knows the Belmont track well
  • Needs a major jump to be in the discussion could land on bottom of Trifecta and Superfecta

#11 Epicharis

  • The Japan invader is perfectly bred to go this distance
  • His only loss was by a nose to Thunder Snow in the UAE Derby as he has 4 wins and 1 loss in 5 starts
  • Word from the Belmont backside on Thursday was that Epicharis seemed a little sore so not sure if he even runs on Saturday if this doesn’t improve

#12 Patch

  • After drawing the outside post 20 in the Kentucky Derby which basically sealed his fate he once again draws the outside post this time with post 12
  • Patch had improved in each of his 3 races prior to the Kentucky Derby
  • With just 4 lifetime starts he has a license to improve here
  • Gets John Velazquez to ride who was the jockey in his only win
  • Has a chance to hit the board in the exotics
