2018 NCAA Men’s Basketball Odds: Updated January 29

There’s a clear top-3 in this week’s AP Poll. And there’s a clear top-3 in this week’s futures sheet from the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. Those teams don’t overlap. Michigan State (+400), Villanova (+400) and Duke (+500) remain the clear favorites at the betting window, despite the recent runs of Virginia and Purdue. Ranked No. 2 and 3 in the country respectively, the Cavaliers and Boilermakers are each +800 to cut down the nets in April.

I think a case can be made for Michigan at 80/1. At this time last year, the Wolverines had seven losses (four in the Big Ten). As we sit here this afternoon, the Wolverines have six losses (four in the Big Ten). Last year’s squad ended up winning the Big Ten Tournament and making a Sweet Sixteen run, where they lost by a point to Oregon. Michigan is one of 11 teams ranked in the top-40 of KenPom’s offensive and defensive efficiency ratings. The Wolverines’ next five Big Ten opponents have a combined conference record of 16-31. If John Beilein’s squad can string together some wins and solidify their tournament position, they could be a dangerous team when March rolls around.
