With the first week of NFL preseason concluded following a Sunday afternoon contest between the Indianapolis Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles  it time to start reviewing and previewing the Week 2 events.  The WagerTalk team takes a quick look an NFL Preseason Week 2 Preview: Detroit Lions at Washington Redskins

Never believe it is too early to make judgments about a team, regardless of sport, in Training Camp, Spring Practice, Spring Games, or NFL Preseason, because it is not.

Taking as quick look at the opening Week 2 Preseason event in Washington, D.C on Thursday offers evidence of just how important it is for teams to gain momentum and conquer new schemes while adjusting to new coordinator and coaching changes. It isn’t an overstatement to believe that the Redskins success, or failures this season, fall in the container of just how well quarterback Robert Griffin III executes the offense.

New Washington Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan worked hard this winter upgrading talent on both the offensive and defensive lines.

Redskins rookie wide receiver Jamison Crowder continues to nurse a nagging hamstring strain and won’t play in the team’s second preseason game Thursday against the Lions.

“We’ll keep him out,” coach Jay Gruden said, per CSNwashington.com. “I want to make sure he gets a couple of good practices before we put him on the field in a game situation. But he’s coming along good.”

Redskins bench boss Gruden told the media that wide receiver DeSean Jackson will not play in the team’s second preseason game Thursday versus Detroit .

Griffin III told WJLA 7’s Alex Parker, a local media personality that covers the Skins, during an in-depth interview. “I don’t feel like I have to come out here and show anybody anything or why I’m better than this guy or better than that guy,” said Griffin to Parker. “It’s more about going out and affirming that for me, I go out and I play, I know I’m the best quarterback on this team. I feel like I’m the best quarterback in the league and I have to go out and show that.

Griffin told Parker, ‘I feel like I’m the best quarterback in the league”.

In the team’s Week 1 win over Cleveland the Skins Griffin III went 4 of 8 passing for 36 yards during two possessions. Wide receiver Pierre Garcon dropped a long toss that would have been a TD. In a nutshell Robert Griffin III and Washington’s starters failed to find the end-zone in the team’s first test this preseason.

Though the Detroit Lions have played just one preseason game and trudged through the majority of training camp (they’ve got one more open practice Tuesday), the Sports Illustrated NFL writer may have coined a new surprise team in the NFC.

In a competitive NFC Central division the Lions finished the 2014 campaign with an 11-5 record. Some believe that the Lions will backup this season playing without All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh leading the defense.

One-plus weeks into the 2015 NFL preseason schedule it is the Minnesota Vikings that appear to be the possible surprise in the Central, if not the entire NFC.

Detroit starting quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate, and rookie running back Ameer Abdullah ran for 67 yards – 45 on one play – to lift the Detroit Lions to a 23-3 preseason victory over the New York Jets. Stafford played only one possession. He threw for 57 yards, completing his only two pass attempts – both to Tate.

”It was a good start,” Stafford told the media in the postgame press conference. ”I thought the tempo was good. We were able to run the ball pretty well tonight, which was good to see.”

Lions’ C Darren Keyton hurt a knee in the second quarter of the win over the Jets and all reports have the injury as serious. coaching staff said that injury looked significant and in the Week 1 victory DT Haloti Ngata (hamstring) did not play.

The Week 1 contest against the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets was so lopsided that the Lions coaching staff changed their schedule for player personnel time and inserted fourth-string quarterback, Garrett Gilbert, into the contest.

This Thursday night the Lions travel to Washington for yet another Thursday night matchup with Kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET to be televised on the NFL Network.
