College Basketball Preview and Free Pick: Georgia State vs. Louisiana
Smaller programs get the chance to shine on tonight’s condensed college basketball slate. One of the
featured matchups will see the Georgia State Panthers hit the road to take on the Louisiana Ragin’
Cajuns for a nationally televised primetime affair.
Date/Time/TV: Fri. Feb.8, 9:00 PM EST, ESPN2
Spread: Georgia State -2 (-110)
The Panthers fell by six points on the road at ULM on Wednesday. That loss snapped a two-game
winning streak. The program is in a tie for 1st place in the Sun Belt with a conference mark of 7-3.
For the season, Georgia State is 16-7 (10-12 ATS).
The Cajuns have a record of 13-10 (7-13 ATS). The team is just 4-6 in Sun Belt play, three games off
the pace of the conference leaders. Louisiana fell at home to Georgia Southern on Wednesday by 17
points, marking the team’s third straight loss.
Georgia State Panthers
Georgia State is a solid 7-3 (3-7 ATS) over the last 10 games. The team has been average on the road
at 5-5 (5-5 ATS) thus far. Team totals are right in the middle at 11-11 thus far, but the Over has been
the correct call for three of the last four.
The Panthers top offensive threat is D’Marcus Simonds. He’s averaging 19.0 ppg and 3.7 dimes.
Devin Mitchell is next up with 13.6 points per contest. Jeff Thomas and Malik Benlevi are
contributing 11.9 and 11.7 ppg respectively.
Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns
Louisiana’s three straight losses are exacerbated by the fact that they all have come by 17 points or
more. The team is 4-6 (2-7 ATS) over the last 10, but they have been good at home with a mark of 7-
3 (7-3 ATS). Team totals skew Over at 16-5 on the year. That benchmark has been hit for the last
eight in a row.
Jakeenan Gant leads the way for the Cajuns with averages of 21.0 ppg and 8.5 boards. Malik
Marquetti is next up with 15.1 ppg and 4.5 rpg. Rounding out the top threats is Marcus Stroman, who
averages 11.9 ppg and 6.3 dimes.
Georgia State vs. Louisiana Prediction
These two clubs hooked up on Georgia State’s home court last month. The Panthers walked off with
an 89-76 victory, easily covering as 6-point favorites. Georgia State has won six straight in this series
and is 8-2 over the last 10 meetings.
Georgia State is one of the top teams in the Sun Belt and have been playing well on an overall basis.
We can’t say the same about Louisiana. The spread is tight with the Panthers checking in as 2-point
road favorites. We like them to win and cover.
