Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The 6-6 Minnesota Golden Gophers out of the Big Ten head to Ford Field in Detroit to take on the 7-5 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets out of the ACC. Minnesota has had an up and down year that saw them go 3-6 in conference play and not become bowl eligible until the final week of the season when they trounced Wisconsin 37-15 in Madison.
Georgia Tech started the year 1-3 before winning six of their last eight to end up in the Quick Lane Bowl. Georgia Tech is a -6 point favorite in this afternoon start.
Gophers Not Overly Excited About Opportunity
Minnesota does not really have anything to get you excited about, but their destruction of Wisconsin in Madison to close out the season may give some of the Golden Gopher naysayers some pause. After all, this is a team that was completely blown out by Maryland and Illinois.
That does not bode well for the Gophers chances in this one as we all know what kind of offense the Yellow Jackets will bring to the table. In that loss to 4-8 Illinois, Minnesota gave up a staggering 430 rushing yards and gave up 315 to a below average Maryland team. I do not know what P.J. Fleck has done to get his squad ready for the Paul Johnson triple option attack, but many gaps have to be plugged for Minnesota to stay competitive in this one.
Yellow Jackets Look to Send Out Coach In Style
Georgia Tech will look to send out longtime head coach Paul Johnson with a win. Johnson announced his retirement in late Novemberfollowing 11 years as the head guy for the Yellow Jackets. Everyone knows what Georgia Tech will bring to the table: the triple option offense. The Jackets averaged 5.7 yards per rush this season which was good for 10th in the nation.
Georgia Tech also averaged a ridiculous 334.9 rushing yards per game in 2018 which was good for the best in the nation and 38.6 yards better than second best Army. Tech has four guys who have carried the ball over 100 times this season and all are averaging close to five yards per carry or better.
The Free Betting Pick
Every time Georgia Tech plays, it just seems so simple. Stack the box, attack the gaps, and stop the run. However, it has proven to be easier said than done. Minnesota knows what is coming, just like they knew what was coming against Illinois, Maryland, etc. The Yellow Jackets should have a big day on the ground and force Minnesota to play from behind all game.
The Minnesota passing game leaves a lot to be desired, so if they do fall behind early, it could get ugly. Georgia Tech is going to want to send Johnson out on a high note, so they will bring a high level of effort. They maul Minnesota at the line of scrimmage and run their way to victory. Take Georgia Tech to cover the spread at Youwager and win, 30-17.
