College Football Games of the Year
The college football Week 3 schedule is littered with mismatches, season making or breaking contests and Games of the Year at the World’s Largest Race and Sportsbook, Westgate of Las Vegas. We college football lovers are presented with 68 games this weekend. And the latest updates on the Game of the Year offerings for this week are as follows: College Football Games of the Year: USC vs Utah.
The Week 3 action begins with three contests on Friday night. North Carolina plays at Wake Forest in a non-conference matchup between ACC rivals. Kansas takes on Boston College, and the Friday Night Lights ESPN finale pits Washington State and Houston meeting in NRG Stadium.
Let’s jump forward to September 20th when the Friday Night portion of the College Football schedule finds the Utah Utes in Los Angeles to square off against the USC Trojans.
I implore those who believe USC is “that” team Saturday’s boxscore versus Stanford paints them as to think again. An unbiased review of the USC victory over conference foe Stanford was by all measure animated. The result was a product of circumstances. Furthermore, if the game was played again, say another 10 times, the result would be different in half of the affairs.
USC start freshman quarterback for 2nd straight season
How rare was the debut of Trojans’ freshman quarterback Kedon Slovas? In the long history of USC football, no frosh has won their debut in such fashion. Slovis went 28 of 33 and set the school record for yards passing in a freshman’s first start. The scenario of the Trojans and Cardinals contest set up nicely for USC and every turn by the SoCal coaches and players in Saturday’s night’s game was the right one. The USC coaching staff was able to take a deep breath and gain positive press with the Trojans 45-20 victory over the No. 23 Cardinal last Saturday night.
Slovis and his teammates have no place to go but down after Saturday’s win over the Cards. USC travels to Provo this Saturday for a non-conference contest against a quality BYU Cougars squad. The Trojans are a short road favorite for Saturday’s contest. And all things being equal, at an inflated handicap. USC is currently a minus-four point fave.
USC vs Utah Westgate Game of the Year in Week 4
Week 4 finds the Trojans and the Utah Utes in one of the Westgate College Football Games of the year. And note that I believe Utah to be the favorites to win the Pac-12 conference title in December. Utah closed the 2018 campaign with only nine senior starters (counting two kickers). The team returns nearly every offensive player who touched the football a season ago.
The Utes sent six players to the NFL Scouting Combine. Four of those returned for their senior season. Of the four key players the heartbeat of the offense running back Zack Moss,
Quarterback Tyler Huntley missed the last five games of 2018 with a broken collarbone. He is back in the saddle with Moss in the backfield and both are supported by the best defense this side of the Mississippi.
The stop-unit returns All-Conference Leki Fotu and Bradlee Anae. The pair anchor arguably one of the best defensive lines in college football and easily the best of the Pac-12. As much hype as the Clemson, Auburn and LSU defensive linemen receiver not that this Utah front has three future NFL’ers.
For 11 games last season, the Trojans started a true freshman at quarterback in JT Daniels. With Daniels out for the rest of the season, the Trojans are about to face the same situation in 2019. Starting a freshman quarterback for the rest of this year’s schedule. This USC team will find running the football difficult behind a pedestrian offensive line.
The Trojans find it nearly impossible in their Week 4 league contest against the Utah Utes to execute a balanced offense without a serviceable running attack. As a result, USC suffers their second consecutive loss, a double-digit defeat, at the hands of the Utes.
