Auburn Tigers vs. Georgia Bulldogs
Auburn and Georgia meet up on Saturday evening for a meeting between SEC foes. Auburn has seen its hopes for a birth in the College Football Playoff derailed by losses to LSU, Mississippi State, and Tennessee, but still have a chance to play spoiler down the stretch with games against Georgia and Alabama still remaining. Georgia still has their eyes set on the Playoff as they sit with only a loss against LSU as their division will be locked up with wins against Auburn and Kentucky. Georgia is currently a -14 point favorite for this home game against the visiting Tigers.
Auburn opened the season as a top-10 team with eyes on representing the SEC in the College Football Playoff. Quite simply, Auburn has underperformed especially on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Jarrett Stidham was supposed to provide the Tigers with the vertical passing game that the Tigers usually do not possess under Gus Malzahn, but that passing game has failed to develop.
Stidham is averaging under 220 yards per game through the air and has only thrown for 10 touchdowns on the season. Stidham was good last week against Texas A&M, but that was more of the guy they were looking for, rather than the performances he gave them against LSU and Mississippi State. The only chance Auburn has to win this game on the road is if Stidham has his best game of the season, if not career, for the Tigers.
Bulldogs Seeking Third Straight
Georgia has rebounded nicely after being embarrassed in Death Valley 36-16. They have rolled off back-to-back wins against the Florida Gators and Kentucky Wildcats. Rarely is a November win against Kentucky a huge one for Georgia, but the victory in Lexington paved the way for Georgia to represent the SEC east in the conference championship game. Georgia has been riding both the running and passing game in the past two victories, despite some early groaning that quarterback Jake Fromm was not living up to his potential.
Instead, Fromm’s emergence against Florida has given Georgia the dual threat that they lacked in the loss to LSU.Georgia’s defense will keep them in every game, so it is the refining of the offense that is key for the Bulldogs down the stretch as a match up, or two, with the Alabama Crimson Tide loom on the horizon.
Auburn vs. Georgia Pick and Prediction
Georgia’s playoff hopes cannot suffer another loss to a team not named Alabama. Fourteen points to a team that began the season ranked in the top-10 in the country seems awfully hefty, but this game means a lot more to Georgia than it does to Auburn. Under Malzahn, Auburn has kicked the can in games that they struggle to find motivation (bowl game vs. UCF, anyone)? While Auburn has the talent to compete with Georgia, it is not going to happen on Saturday night. Despite the huge spread, I am taking Georgia to romp over Auburn and make a statement. Georgia wins and covers, 38-17.
