Oregon State Beavers

Oregon State has failed to register a victory in 20 straight games as a visitor. The Beavers (1-1) are under thee guidance of first-year head coach Jonathan Smith. Oregon State has explosive on offense in their first two games this season. The Beavers have recorded 15 plays of 25 or more yards and enter Reno coming off a 48-25 win over FCS Southern Utah.

In the Beavers 20-plus point win over Southern Utah the squad lost starting tailback Artavis Pierce. The big play running back ran for 168 yards and two touchdowns at Ohio State in Week #1. Pierce will miss four-to-six weeks with an elbow injury. OSU will turn to backup RB Jermar Jefferson who rushed for 238 yards against Southern Utah in Pierce’s place.

Coach Smith continues to give both Jake Luton and Conor Blount equal shares of practice snaps in the first team offense. Luton suffered head trauma in the loss to Ohio State. Blount started versus Southern Utah and directed the Beavers to 41 first-half point. Luton took the signal caller reigns in the second half of the Beavers win. Both Blount and Luton are available for tonight’s event but the coaching staff refused to announce publically who the starter will be until just before halftime.

Reports out of Corvallis have stated that Blount would start but both would see playing time.

Nevada Wolf Pack

Nevada fell by a 41-10 margin to SEC Vanderbilt last Saturday. The Wolf Pack opened the season with a 72-19 victory over Portland State. Nevada returns 15 starters, including quarterback Ty Gangi, from last year’s 3-9 team. The current Pack group have played their best football on their home turf winning four of their last five at MacKay Stadium.

Gangi is a dual threat behind center. The Wolf Pack field general averages 279 yards per game and has capable wide receivers in Kaleb Fossum (12 catches, 195 yards) and McLane Mannix (10-218, 3 TDs).

Prediction

Nevada sports the Rocky Long 3-3-5 defensive tactic under coordinator Jeff Casteel. The Pac-12 and Mountain West members are not thrown by this defensive look and while unusual in college football Oregon State will be prepared to attack the stack scheme.

Nevada is searching for its first win over a Pac-12 team since defeating a pedestrian Washington State Cougars squad 24-13 in 2014.

This is not the same Oregon State team of a year ago. And while Nevada is more equipped to deal a defeat on their home turf there is an energy and confidence level for the Beavers under their new coaching staff that reflects a team that expects to win.

Oregon State snaps their long road losing streak in Reno on Saturday night, an outright underdog winner over the ‘Pack.
