College Football 2019 Regular Season Team Wins

The 2018 Big 12 college football season was disappointing as a whole. The Oklahoma Sooners produced a second straight Heisman Trophy winner. In addition, the Sooners were awarded a spot in the College Football Playoffs four-team bracket. And 2018 was anointed the year that the Texas Longhorns were to reemerge as a national title contender. In hindsight, the expectations placed on the team and head coach Tom Herman were based on blue-chip recruits rather than proven production. College Football 2019 Regular Season Team Wins.

Labeling the Longhorns 2018 season a disappointment is by itself baseless. Herman, his staff and the players earned a spot in the conference championship game. And followed that up with a victory as an underdog in the Sugar Bowl defeating a blue-chip rich Georgia Bulldogs squad.

2019 Longhorns favorites to challenge Sooners

The Las Vegas and offshore sportsbooks have for the second straight season positioned the Austin City Limits Longhorns as the Big 12 team most likely to upset favorites Oklahoma. In this case, the returning player personnel for Herman will need to show up with their helmets buckled each and every week. Had Texas defeated Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game it wouldn’t have been enough for the squad to earn a New Year’s Six invitation. Nor would the Horns have replaced the Sooners in the 2019 January Final Four.

Teams that play to their college football odds on gameday win matchups they are supposed to win. And those teams also find ways to steal victories when playing the role of underdogs. Schools with expectations of conference crowns and College Football Playoff spots don’t lose season openers. Furthermore, they don’t allow 33-yard touchdown passes with 16 seconds left in the fourth quarter resulting in losses.  Not on their home field.   Texas lost a pair of 2018 games versus Maryland and West Virginia. And the defeats all but ended any chance of playing for a national championship.  The season-opening loss was as a double-digit road favorite to Big 10 Maryland. The 33-yard pass for a touchdown with seconds remaining was on their home turf in Austin.

There is no room on the trophy case for such meltdowns. Not if a coach and his players expect to mix-it-up with big-time college football programs in January.

The Longhorns opened with college football odds of 9.5 wins at the Las Vegas Superbook in mid-July. Two weeks later the regular-season total and odds are now at 9 wins.
