The Irish are the 10 seed for this ACC tournament. Notre Dame started 3-0 in conference play, but lost leading scorer Bonzi Colson to injury and lost seven in a row. The Irish are now 2-1 since Colson’s return, after escaping an upset bid from Pittsburgh Tuesday night 67-64.
Notre Dame led by as much as 14 points in the second half Tuesday but let the Panthers rally and came nowhere close to covering at -17.
Virginia Tech, meanwhile, finished 10-8 in the ACC this season. The Hokies only started 2-4 in conference, then won seven of their next nine. And they handed Virginia it’s only ACC loss of the season. V-Tech then lost two of its last three, including a tough 69-68 decision at Miami last Saturday.
The Hokies won the only meeting this season between these teams back in January 80-75. However, the Irish were without both Colson and PG Matt Ferrell that night.
Notre Dame is 13-4 with Colson this season, 6-9 without him. Also, the Irish are coming off a poor shooting performance (from the field) Tuesday night; we expect better Wednesday. Finally, Notre Dame won this tournament three years ago and made it to the championship game last year, while Virginia Tech has very little conference tournament pedigree.
The Tar Heels are the 6 seed for this tournament, after going in 11-7 in conference this season. Carolina won six in a row late, then lost its last two games, one at the buzzer against Miami and a 74-64 decision at Duke last Saturday in which they blew a 10-point halftime lead.
The Orange, meanwhile, are the 11 seed, after going 8-10 in conference play. Syracuse started 1-4 in the ACC and near the end lost three in a row but finished with a victory over Clemson. The Orange then opened this tournament with a 73-64 win over Wake Forest Tuesday.
Carolina took the only meeting this season between these teams two weeks ago at the Carrier Dome 78-74. The Heels led by 12 with 10 minutes to go, let Syracuse tie the score with three minutes to go, scored the last two buckets for the win but missed the cover at -5.
Also, that game played over a total of 146.
North Carolina owns the edge on offense, but Syracuse owns the edge on defense. And the earlier meeting played close. We’ll take the points here.
