In auto racing, drivers run time trials in an effort to get pole position where the actual race begins. Being able to start up front and avoid all the jostling for position behind usually makes for a cleaner race and a clearer path to the finish line. The MLB is obviously nothing like racing, but we do still have teams trying to get out in front quickly and set the pace. Doing so puts pressure on all the other teams in the chasing pack, especially as we start to get deeper into the season. When a lead at the top of a division starts to grow, the pressure on the other teams begins to get very real, as it often means that they find themselves dragged into a Wild Card battle. That is where the Arizona Diamondbacks find themselves at the moment, as a poor run of form has them sitting well off the pace in the NL West. The division leading Dodgers will be in town to start the week, with Arizona looking to close that gap a little. It is the Dodgers who are favored by 1 ½ on Monday night, with the run total set at 8 ½.

Why bet on the LA Dodgers
While the rest of the teams in the NL West go through some serious ups and downs, the LA Dodgers simply continue to win and add to their lead at the top of the division. They closed out last week on a 6-game winning streak, taking their season record to 54-25, good enough for a 13-game lead at the top of the NL West. Part of the reason that they have been able to reach this point is due to their domination of the other teams in the division. Versus the rest of the pack in the West, the Dodgers are an impressive 23-8. Included in that is a 5-2 record against the D-Backs in previous meetings this season. LA are 20-16 SU and 15-21 ATS on the road. They will have Clayton Kershaw (7-1, 2.85 ERA) on the mound for this one.
Why bet on the Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks are coming into the new week on a rather brutal run of recent form. While they did close out last week with a win, that took them to just 3-7 in their last 10 games. The end result is that they are now 15 games off the pace in the division, while also losing ground in the Wild Card race, where they are now sitting 2 games back of the final spot, a gap that is certainly more manageable than their current division standing. A huge part of the problem for the 39-40 Diamondbacks is that they have just not been very good at home, going 15-21 SU there this season, which includes being 16-20 ATS. That said, they are 9-6 ATS as a home dog and will have their ace Zack Greinke (8-3, 2.91 ERA) on the mound for this one.
Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction
This should be a game for baseball fans who love a great pitching duel, as we have former teammates, both of whom are having great years, going head to head. I think that helps keep this one close and low scoring.
