Philadelphia Phillies at Cleveland Indians Preview & Prediction

There are now just 10 days remaining in the MLB regular season, which means that it’s crunch time for the teams who are still in the hunt for a playoff spot. There are some huge series set to go this weekend, with the outcome of those games sure to have an impact on the playoff picture. Some teams will improve their chances of getting in, while others will see their race come to an end at the final hurdle. The pressure on these teams is going to be unbelievable, but it will also serve as valuable experience for those who live to move on, as this final batch of games is going to feel like a playoff series for many of them. The Philadelphia Phillies are still technically alive in the playoff picture, but their chances of getting in are slim to zero. They can still have a say in the race, though, as they will be in Cleveland this weekend to face a Cleveland Indians team that is right there in the AL Wild Card race. The Indians are favored by 1 ½ at home, with the run total set at 9.

Why bet on the Philadelphia Phillies

At 4 games off the pace, the season really does appear to be over for the Phillies. It’s sure to be a disappointing result for a team that went all-in during the offseason to land the services of Bryce Harper. It is obvious that there are other pieces needed to make this team a winner, as they are well off the pace being set by the Atlanta Braves at the top of the NL East. The Phillies just took 2 of 3 from the Braves on the road, but it’s all too little too late, especially since that took them to a mere 5-5 in their last 10 games. The Phillies are 3 games below .500 at 35-38 on the road and are a decent 10-7 SU in interleague games. They will send Drew Smyly (4-6, 6.22 ERA) to the mound for this one.

Why bet on the Cleveland Indians

There is almost zero chance that the Cleveland Indians close the 4-game lead that the Minnesota Twins have at the top of the AL Central, which is why their focus is now almost certainly on the Wild Card. They are right in the hunt there, as it looks as though the final playoff spot is going to come down to either them or the Tampa Bay Rays, with both teams tied for the final spot. Cleveland certainly looks to be up for the fight, though, as they are coming into this one on a 4-game winning streak, taking their record to 8-2 in the last 10 games in the process. The Indians are 47-31 at home and are just 6-8 SU in interleague play. They will hand the ball to Shane Bieber (14-7, 3.26 ERA) for this one.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

The fact of the matter is that while the Phillies do still have some slim playoff hopes, it’s the Indians who are likely to be the more motivated of the two teams. I am taking Cleveland to win a close one.
