As we exit the first week of August and a week after the non-waiver trade deadline in Major League Baseball the usual suspects, e.g. injuries, uniform malfunctions, retirement announcements and the dreaded ‘designated for assignment” news and notes are beginning to appear in your delivered and virtual newspapers.
Tigers Achilles lies in their Starting Rotation
The Detroit Tigers are making a hard push at the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central.. The Motor City crew are a mere two games out of first place in the AL Central and just1.5 back of the second American League wild card slot behind both Toronto and Baltimore. The Tigers appear to have returned one of their prized starting pitcher back from the disabled list too soon. After one start, an outing that saw putting right-hander Jordan Zimmermann allow 6 second inning runs in his Thursday start, the team is placing him back on the disabled list.
Zimmermann pitched Thursday in his first start back from a neck problem. He was pulled in the disastrous second inning with a supposed lat muscle issue, and manager Brad Ausmus said after Saturday night’s game that Zimmermann would return to the DL. The Tigers will use Daniel Norris as the team’s fifth starter in place of Zimmerman who was 9-5 with a 4.44 ERA.
Another Disappointing Season for the A’s
Sonny Gray’s disappointing season was front and center on Saturday. Gray will be placed on the DL with soreness in his right forearm. Gray (5-11) felt struggled with his mechanics due to the forearm issue and surrendered two runs on five hits. The injury is the latest in a miserable season for Gray. This will be his second stint on the DL, his first coming due to right shoulder fatigue.
The Alex Rodriguez and Bib Apple relationship looks to be coming to an end. The Yankees and Rodriguez have announced a press conference at Yankee Stadium for 11 AM ET Sunday, the team announced. While no official reason for the presser has been announced A-Rod is likely to call it quits. He is receiving very little playing time and his slash/line is a mere .204/.252/.356 (62 OPS+) with nine homers in 62 games. Rodriguez has started only one of the club’s past 14 events.
The PPR+ (Pitcher Power Rating) incorporates many sabermetrics to get the pitcher skill. It includes unique variables like air density, park configuration, Ump tendencies, GB/FB inducements, wind strength, wind direction, pitcher 1st pitch a strike ratio, opposing teams WRC+ in the last 14 days and many more. All of these data points are weighted for an overall score.
