Milwaukee coming off a loss last night here at the FiServ Forum, when the Bucks had no answer for the long range shooting of the Celtics, as Boston snapped Milwaukee’s 9-game winning streak. New York has had major problems with the Bucks the last 3 years, as side has been a decent road team (10-6 vs. the number last 16) and Milwaukee hasn’t seemed particularly motivated off a loss (7-7 vs. the points) but are 2-0 at home in 2nd of back-to-backs (but will Giannis
play 2nd night of back-to-back with a sore knee?).

*** Key Release: Minnesota

Houston had an unusual and historic meltdown (even for the Rockets) at Minnesota last night, blowing a 19-point 2nd half lead and allowing the Timberwolves to score the last 22 points, while being held scoreless themselves for the last 7½ minutes of the game for a 107-101 loss. Don’t expect that result to exactly “fire up” a Rocket side that’s returning to be as cold as week-old embers in a Minnesota winter. Not sure what the addition of Kelly Olynyk and Avery Bradley from Miami for Victor Oladipo will do, as Olynyk is just average and Bradley hasn’t played much this season due to injuries and he’s only known for his defensive talents (a hard-sell in these days of mile a minute action, pull-up treys on the break and coast to coast dunks). Rockets have won 3 of 4 vs. the points in 2nd night of back-to-back games on the road, but Minny also has a positive record at home in that situation, so would lay it again.

Detroit is coming off hosting Brooklyn last night, losing a 113-111 decision, but covering the generous 6½-point spread. The Pistons have been dynamite on the road lately, covering 7 of their last 8 as a visitor (won 3 of those SU), mostly getting generous points. Detroit is 5-1 vs. the points this season in 2nd night of back-to-back games (3-1 on the road), and Pistons rank 7th in fewest points allowed compared with all other NBA teams in that segment, and Dwane Casey’s team is also shooting 48% as a team in that span. Washington has gone quietly for the most part since the end of February, logging a 2-10 SU (5-7 vs. the spread) despite Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook continuing to provide the points (combined 54 per game last 12) and Wizards are shooting 48% in that span. The Pistons have lost 10 straight in Washington (last win was Jan. 28, 2014!), covering just 1 of last 8 of those. Note “under” at this location in the series is 11-3-1 dating to 2012.

San Antonio ended up getting nothing out of LaMarcus Aldrige (no rings, no NBA Finals appearances, no wins in a playoff series the last 3 years), so they bought him out and cut him loose. San Antonio welcomes a trade-deadline reinforced Chicago team, with the Spurs riding a 4-game losing streak. Now, the Bulls are keeping their fingers crossed that G Zach LaVine’s gimpy ankle allows him to play, as he’s one of if not the biggest surprise in the league this season, scoring 28 ppg. Chicago added all-star C Nikola Vucevic and Boston’s C/PF Danierl Theis as depth and help at PF (but he won’t play in this one). Bulls could’ve used NO PG Lonzo Ball, but couldn’t get there. Still, they are markedly improved, and they needed something after losing 8 of their last 12 and falling 5 games below .500.

Dallas is coming off a 109-94 home loss to Indiana last night, but note that the Mavs are 14-6 SU in their last 20 games and have responded to those previous 5 losses with 5 double-digit wins. New Orleans very inconsistent since February, compiling an 8-13 SU mark and have most decidedly not bounced back this season, and have lost only a single game following a victory 0 times this calendar year. The Pels have had losing streaks of 5, 3, 2, 3, 2, 2, 3 and 2 straight in 2021. The Mavs have won 5 straight in the series and covered 6 of the last 8 meetings with the ‘Cans, including a heavy 143-130 decision Feb 12 in this season’s only clash.

Boston played last night in Milwaukee, but they’ve lost 6 straight in 2nd night of back-to-back games and might still be celebrating definitive 122-114 victory over the previously streaking Bucks. Also, must note that was only the 2nd road win in Celtics last 12 away from TD Garden. The Thunder have had two days off and aren’t playing too badly (5-4 SU last 9). and must admit, even with the possible addition of Evan Fournier to infuse the bench, tough to justify laying the 10-point opening number with Celtic side that’s 3-8 as road chalk this season.

Utah is 15-5 against the number at home this season, but just 3-4 laying 9½ or more at the Vivint Smart Home Arena this season after winning but failing to cover the 9½ against Memphis last night. The Jazz led by 16 at the half, but had to hold their breath all the way down to the final seconds of the game, staving off a valiant Grizzly comeback. Utah was fueled by 35 pts. from Donovan Mitchell and 25 from Rudy Gobert, while Memphis PG Ja Morant (32) and swingman Dillon Brooks (22) very nearly matched the Jazz stride for stride. Will take the points again tonight against Utah side that’s now 3-7 last 10 laying 9½ or more.

Philly steam rolling teams right now, winning 10 of their last 11, including a 6-1 mark in last 7 playing without all-star and MVP candidate Joel Embiid. Of course, this game presents the most difficult road opponent in that run, as LA has won and covered 7 of their last 9 at Staples in that period, including wins over Utah and then-streaking Atlanta. Clipper leader Kawhi Leonard is playing like an MVP himself, scoring 26 ppg and shooting 52% on the season, and the addition of vet PG Rajon Rondo is a coup for LA considering Patrick Beverley has been injured. Still, Leonard has a sore knee and backup F Marcus Morris has a calf injury, while it’s doubtful Rondo will make an impact this quickly. Mix in the fact that Clip C Serge Ibaka has been declared out for this game, have to look at Philly first.

Cleveland ran into a desperate Laker team last night and suffered through a smothering defensive effort from the Lakers, playing without LeBron or AD. losing 100-86. Cavs, playing without star G Collin Sexton (26 ppg; hamstring), shot just 39% against LA, and now have to face a rested Sacramento side that’s on a 5-1 streak of green pasture and has one of the hottest players around right now in De’Aaron Fox. Fox has scored 29.2 ppg on 51.4% shooting over the last 12 games, while Buddy Hield (20.4 ppg, 5 rpg L12) and C Richaun Holmes (18 ppg, 10.6 rpg last 10 games) are more than adequate wingmen. Cavs nothing special when unrested (5-5 vs. spread) and certainly noting special without Sexton (check status).
