What a wild two months it’s been for Dustin Johnson (and that’s saying a lot, considering his background). The 2016 US Open champion had won three tournaments in a row heading into the Masters in April. He withdrew on the eve of the Masters after injuring his back at his home. He hasn’t won a tournament since, and he missed the cut at the Memorial two weeks ago. And on the eve of the 2017 US Open, he’s celebrating the birth of his child, who was born on Monday night. Will DJ be ready to defend his title? At the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, Johnson is a 7/1 favorite at Erin Hills.
And for as many question marks that are surrounding Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson’s status is a mystery as well. Mickelson vowed to skip the US Open in favor of attending his daughter’s graduation. But now that rain is potentially in the forecast for Thursday, there is a window for Mickelson to attend his daughter’s graduation in California and make it to Wisconsin for his tee time if there is a weather delay.
For the first time in 25 years and just the ninth time since 1945, the US Open will play as a par 72 setup. The length of the course will fluctuate from day-to-day, but at 7,700 yards, it is expected to be the longest US Open setup in tournament history.
