Florida State and Southern Mississippi are scheduled to kickoff their holiday bowl event at 1:30 p.m. ET from Shreveport, Louisiana on Independence Stadium field December 27. The Walk-On’s Independence Bowl Spread: Seminoles -15 over Golden Eagles.

Southern Miss got the Power 5 bowl match-up that their fan base wanted and those not in attendance can watch the game on ESPN or live stream the event via WatchESPN.

The So Miss Golden Eagles (8-4) and Florida State Seminoles (6-6) event should result in a competitive holiday affair.  An injury riddled season resulted in Florida State needing a win over Louisiana-Monroe to become bowl eligible. The 6-6 campaign by the ‘Noles created plenty of drama in Florida this past season. As well, the departure of head coach Jimbo Fisher to Texas A&M this week, presents question marks surrounding the squads motivation for this minor bowl contest.

The departure of Fisher offers long time FSU assistant Odell Haggins another opportunity to be the bench boss. Haggins was the interim coach for the team’s win 42-10 victory over Monroe.

The two schools have a history but the last game between the two was over 20-years ago. A contest that saw FSU rout the Eagles by a 54-14 margin. Florida State leads the all-time series against Southern Miss with a record of 13-8-1. Long time Southern Miss fans remember the 1989 contest between the two programs. A game that saw Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre lead the Golden Eagles to a 30-26 win in Jacksonville, Florida.

In a season when the Seminoles were expected to challenge for a College Football National Championship it took all the coaching staff could muster just to get Florida State an invite. The Seminoles hold an NCAA-best streak for consecutive bowl appearances with 36.

The oddsmakers opened Florida State as two-touchdown favorites (-14) last week. Sharp money on the ‘Noles has moved the point-spread to -16. The total currently sits at 49.
