Atletico Madrid Vs Mallorca Preview & Pick

It feels as though we have just returned to action, but the La Liga season is beginning to wind down very quickly. That is what happens when a league is forced to condense the schedule in order to get the season finished in a timely fashion. It has very quickly become apparent that some teams are better equipped to handle this cramped schedule than others, to the point where it might just end up deciding who wins the title. Barcelona looked to be in control prior to the lockdown, but they have buckled since returning, while Real Madrid have ground out win after win to get on the brink of a 4-point lead at the top. The title race is, not surprisingly, down to those two teams, but we also have European places and relegation waiting to be decided. This game features a pair of teams involved in those battles, with Atletico Madrid looking to secure a Champions League spot, while Mallorca are down near the bottom of the table fighting for their life. Madrid come into this very important game favored by 1 ½, with the goal total set at 2 ½.

Why bet on Atletico Madrid

Under Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid have seen some real success, all while adopting a brand of football that is not always particularly easy on the eye. This is not a team that overpowers anyone with offense, choosing instead to form a solid defensive wall that is very difficult to penetrate. That is not to say that this team cannot score, as they proved in a 2-2 tie with Barcelona in their last game, a match that saw Madrid twice come from behind. The downside of this formula is that a lot of games end tied, with 14 of their 33 games this season ending in a stalemate. This is a team that has fewer losses than Barcelona this season, but those draws have killed them. At home this season, Madrid is 10-5-1, scoring 23 and giving up just 10.

Why bet on Mallorca

If the season were to end today, Mallorca would end up as one of the 3 teams relegated out of La Liga. This is a team that is not going down without a fight, though, as they are coming off a massive 5-1 win over Celta Vigo, the team they need to catch to steer clear of relegation. Even with that win, though, Mallorca are still 5 points back, which makes you feel that their big win simply delayed the inevitable, especially with this game coming next. They do tend to make life tough for Atletico, though, with 2 of their last 3 meetings ending in a tie. The lone exception was a 2-0 loss to Madrid earlier this season. Mallorca has the worst road record in the league, going 1-2-13, while scoring 13 and surrendering 36.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I don’t expect to see a ton of goals in this one, but I am still leaning towards Atletico Madrid to cover the spread.
