Real Madrid struggled a bit in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League against Ajax. But they managed to escape from Amsterdam Arena with a win and extended their great form. They will now have a theoretically easy job on Sunday when they will host Girona. Girona have been in the exact opposite form, having lost each of their last six.

Spread: Girona +2

Total: 3.25 Goals

Real Madrid (14-6-3) are coming off a really hard-fought 2-1 win on the road against Ajax. They struggled to break their opponents’ defenses but took the lead at the hour mark. Their opponents pulled even at the 75th but Asensio scored the winner at the 87th minute. Real Madrid have been in stunning form lately, winning seven of their last eight matches in all competitions (7-0-1). But they kept just two clean sheets in that span. Real Madrid are now sitting at the 3rd spot of the La Liga with 45 points, two behind Atletico Madrid who have one more match. They have been equally good at home so far (8-2-1), where they actually have the best defense (5). Real Madrid have won each of their last four home matches, and 10 of their last 12 there.

Girona (5-9-9) were actually not bad in their home match against Huesca last week. But they were unlucky to concede twice in the first half and eventually fell by 2-0. They have been in really horrible form at this point in the season, losing each of their last six. They have failed to score in their last two but have been consistent scorers overall. Girona are now sitting at the 17th spot of the league table with 24 points. They are just one point ahead of the relegation zone but with one less match. Even a draw here would be a massive result against Real Madrid. Girona have actually been quite competitive on the road so far (3-4-4) but have not won any of their last seven (0-5-2). They failed to score in three of those matches but scored at least twice in the other four.

The two teams also met in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey a couple of weeks ago. Real Madrid won both matches but didn’t keep any clean sheets. They also didn’t keep a clean sheet in the 4-1 away win in the first round of the La Liga.

All five matches between the two sides have been massive goal-fests and I expect something similar. Girona look really deflated at the most crucial part of the season and this doesn’t look well. Real Madrid have been in top form lately and will probably add to Girona’s misery.
