Santos Laguna are cone of the most successful teams in Mexico over the past decade. But they had very opposite runs in the Apertura and the Clausura last season. They went from struggling really badly to actually capturing the Clausura title. They will now start the new Apertura season with a home match against Lobos BUAP. Lobos BUAP had tons of luck last season, as despite being mathematically relegated, they actually didn’t.
Toluca are coming off a really solid season where they managed to reach the playoffs on both tournaments. However, they failed to grab a single title, and will be really interested in repeating their success this season. They will now start their season on Sunday, when they will play host to Monarcas. Monarcas also made the playoffs on both the Apertura and the Clausura last season, but had little to show.
Columbus Crew have been in really bad shape over the past couple of months. They will be looking to return to winning ways when they will host Orlando City on Saturday. Orlando City have been in equally bad form and are coming off a tough loss mid-week. They were eliminated from the US Open Cup on Wednesday, and will be tired and upset.
Tigres had a really successful season last year, with a lot of great things to show in all competitions. They will now commence their duties on Saturday, when they will play host to Club Leon. Club Leon had a really productive offensive line last season, but were eliminated in the playoffs of the Apertura by Tigres. They will now look to get revenge for that elimination.
Chivas Guadalajara will surely want to forget last season, where they failed to reach the playoffs in both competitions. They have had a lot of problems lately, both financial and inter-personal. They will now look to get the best out of this season, and will start with an away match against Club Tijuana. Los Xolos had a pretty solid season, especially in the Clausura where they managed to reach the playoffs.
Monterrey were one of the best teams in the Liga MX last season, but they only managed to grab the Apertura Cup. They failed to win a league title last season, and they will be eager to do so this year. They will now start their season with an away match against Pachuca on Saturday. Pachuca are coming off a really tough run over the past couple of seasons, as they failed to make the playoffs for the third time in the last four tournaments.
The bulk of the Liga MX matches for the first match-day of the Apertura will be played on Saturday. In the first match of the day, Cruz Azul will be playing host to Puebla. Cruz Azul were mediocre at best last season, only making the playoffs in the Apertura. Puebla had the opposite run, as they were bad in the Apertura but pretty solid in the Clausura.
The Liga MX that is starting this Friday has just two matches in the opening day. Apart from Veracruz and Pumas who will clash in the opener, Atlas will play host to Queretaro. Atlas made a pretty mediocre run last season, and just barely made the Apertura playoffs. Queretaro were one of the worst teams in the Liga MX last season, and will probably fight to avoid relegation.
