Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks Preview & Pick

In the average 162-game season, we tend to see teams go through some serious ups and downs over the course of the year. Even with that, it always seems to be the favored teams who find a way to eventually settle down and rise to the top. The feeling this season was that with a 60-game season, we might just see a team get off to a fast start and hold on for a playoff spot. That is not exactly proving to be the case, though, as there aren’t really any surprises to be found at the top of the divisions in both the American and National Leagues. There is still time for that to change, though, but it is beginning to look as though the divisions will follow the path that was predicted. For a minute, it looked as though the Colorado Rockies might be set to make a push in the NL West, but they are heading in the wrong direction. They will look to right the ship on Monday night when they head to Arizona as a 1 ½ run underdog. The run total for this one is set at 9 ½.

Why bet on the Colorado Rockies

For just a minute, it looked as though the Colorado Rockies were going to mount a serious challenge against the LA Dodgers this season They came out strong and maintained the lead in the NL West for a bit before things went off the rails in the worst way possible. The Rockies come into this series on the heels of back to back sweeps at the hands of the Dodgers and the Houston Astros, which means that they are now on a 7-game losing skid. A team that was once 13-8 is now 13-15 and 8 games out of the lead in the West. They now go on the road, where they are 6-7, to face a Diamondbacks team that took 2 of 3 from them earlier in the season. It will be Ryan Castellani (0-1, 3.77 ERA) who gets the start.

Why bet on the Arizona Diamondbacks

You might take a look at the current state of the Colorado Rockies and immediately pencil this one in as a win for the Diamondbacks, but that might just be a mistake. The reality is that Arizona are in freefall at the moment, too, and come into this one on a 5-game losing skid. The Diamondbacks were pounded over the weekend, getting swept in a 3-game series with the San Francisco Giants and getting outscored 17-4 in those games. If there is one thing that you can say about this matchup this season, it is that is has delivered offense. In their 3 earlier meetings, the Rockies and Diamondbacks combined for 55 runs. Arizona will send Merrill Kelly (2-3, 2.59 ERA) to the mound on Monday night.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

The pitching matchup would seem to suggest that we might see a more defensive type of game this time around, but these two seem to have a habit of getting into shootouts. I am leaning towards Arizona to win, but I am also taking a shot with the OVER.
