Washington took a short flight from Wrigley Field to Busch Stadium on Sunday night. A short trip that didn’t include a celebration. The Nationals held a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the ninth innings over the home town Cubs only to see Chicago earn a walk-off win with a grand slam by David Bote. MLB Preview and Free Pick: Cardinals vs Nationals.
Vegas Rotation: (903) Washington Nationals at (904) St Louis Cardinals
Projected Starting Pitchers: LHP Tommy Milone vs RHP Miles Mikolas
Date and Time: Monday, August 13, 8:10 p.m. ET
Venue: Busch Stadium in St Louis
Line: St Louis -137, 8.5
TV Broadcasts: MASN (Washington), FS Midwest (St. Louis)
St Louis Cards First pitch for tonight’s senior circuit affair is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET in downtown St Louis’ Busch Stadium with the Nats throwing Milone (1-1, 5.50 ERA) to the hill to oppose the Redbirds Mikolas (12-3, 2.74).
The St. Louis Cardinals steamrolled an undermanned Kansas City Royals troupe this past weekend including an 8-2 triumph at the “K” earning the franchise a fifth straight victory.
Veteran southpaw Tommy Milone has returned to his skill set after an initial two solid starts after being brought up from the minors to fill in for an injured Stephen Strasburg. Milone was hit hard by a good hitting Atlanta club, especially when facing left-handed pitching.
Washington has suffered a number of injuries to their elite starting pitching and are likely to be without corner infielder Anthony Rendon (wrist) unless the team finds itself in a late game position to need defense at third base.
St Louis Cardinals
Mikolas and his Cardinal teammates defeated Miami in his last start, his fourth consecutive win, in a victory he surrendered two runs on five hits over seven innings of work. The Cardinals’ righty owns 16 quality starts in his 23 outings this season. Mikolas hasn’t been issued a losing decision since late June versus Atlanta and has allowed three runs or fewer in nine consecutive turns.
Despite the published reports that Mikolas has outpitched his skill set and underperformed versus his surface numbers with 12 wins and a 2.74 ERA his execution this season is in fact in line with his 3.99 SIERA. The right-hander doesn’t blow hitters away, pitching to soft contact, allowing him to mitigate his lack of strikeouts with the aforementioned soft contact and ground ball outs.
Milone has a much higher hard contact rate than his counterpart Mikolas. In addition Milone’s soft contact percentage is nearly 10 points lower than the St Louis starter. Milone has never had a strikeout rate above 19 percent in his career and his new primary pitch, his slider, isn’t creating swings and misses that are necessary for him to be successful.
Milone’s career has been on the decline since his 2012 rookie season pitching in the Oakland Coliseum. Conversely All-Star right-hander Mikolas hasn’t faced a Nationals batter in over a half-decade giving him a significant advantage tonight the first two turns through the Nats lineup.
