As disappointing at the 2017 season was for the Angels it was a step-up from their 2016 campaign when the team finished fourth in the American League West division. While last year’s squad recorded an 80-82 overall mark they finished second behind the Houston Astros and improved six games over their 74-88 mark in 2017.  2018 MLB Spring Training Team Preview: Anaheim Angels.

This offseason, the Angels made significant moves to challenge the world champion Astros in the division. General manager Billy Eppler and his staff have added a talented supporting cast to surround Mike Trout and Justin Upton. This with the belief they have put the franchise in a position to return to being postseason contenders.

The official 40-man roster and 19 non-roster invitees combine to total 69 players who have all arrived in Tempe, Arizona, for Spring Training.

Trout worked hard this offseason in an attempt to be more flexible with the intent of remaining healthy. The team re-signed Upton to a five-year, $106 million deal. The most exciting addition to the team came in December when they told Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani that he could, in fact, be the two-way player, he insisted on.

The club also added veteran second baseman Ian Kinsler from the Tigers and signed free-agent infielder Zack Cozart.

The Angels offseason moves offered the offense more contact hitters and bolstered their defense. The question marks for the team are in the depth of their pitching staff and bullpen, as well, with their starting rotation.

The World Series-champion Astros enter the season as the overwhelming favorite to repeat as not only the division winners but to earn their second straight Fall Classic title. However, following the Angels this spring as well during the regular season with the addition of Ohtani is must watch baseball.
