The main event of UFC 234 is a title fight between current Middleweight Champion Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker and hard hitting Kelvin Gastelum. Whittaker recently defeated Yoel Romaro twice defending his Middleweight crown, an extremely challenging feat. Prior to that he defeated Ronaldo Souza, another elite level fighter. While Kelvin Gastelum also defeated Ronaldo Souza by decision in Brazil and KO’ed past middleweight champion Michael Bisping.

Event: (24201) K. Gastelum at (24202) R. Whittaker
Date/Time: February 9, 2019 3AM EST
Play: K. Gastelum +210

Both fighters have impressive stats backing up their highly touted abilities. Whittaker currently has the highest striking rate among active middleweights (5/min) as well as the longest active UFC winnning streak in the division with 8. Gastelum is 5-1 since fighting in the Middleweight division where he appears more comfortable. One incredible stat on Kelvin is his “knock down to punch ratio” which currently stands at 9 to 1, which means he drops his opponents 1 time on every 9 power shots thrown. Scary power for one of the smallest guys in the division, as well as the 5th highest striking rate among active Middleweights (3.73/min).

“The Reaper” definitely has more weapons then Kelvin, utilizing kicks more in attempts to chop at his opponents. He’s great at hiding his right body kick and head kick, thrown in combination with his left hook is dangerous. Gastelum on the other hand maybe smaller, but he’s very intelligent in the cage game planning to leverage his speed and power pulling opponents in to strike first. Kevin’s great at shifting his body working angles to counter, sticking to his strengths a power 1, 2 combination. His ability to wrestle maybe an option to take the champ down, but Whittaker proved he can stuff takedowns when he faced Romero.

Overall for me, this play is more of value with current odds at (+203) on Gastelum is fantastic. When I handicap this fight I have the same feel as I did handicapping Dillashaw (-205) vs Cejudo (+175), placing a lot of value in the price tag on Cejudo, where the fight would be closer then odds indicated. The main event at UFC 234 has the same feel, there’s value in Gastelum’s price. No doubt Whittaker is a killer with tons of ability, but at (-225) to (-235) is just way to much juice to lay in a fight I believe is much closer. In tight Kelvin is extremely powerful, one of the best in the division throwing shots in the pocket. With his speed and power, I’m betting the dog Kelvin Gastelum at solid plus odds to get the victory and become the new Middleweight champion.
