Detroit and Philadelphia take to Wells Fargo Center court tonight in the City of Brotherly Love with a 7:00 p.m. ET scheduled tip. NBA Free Pick: Sixers -6 over Pistons
The young but talented Philadelphia 76ers (-6, 210) have bounced back from a rough stretch in December. And as long as center Joel Embiid is healthy the 76ers are competitive against the best in the league. Embiid wasn’t 100 percent during the team’s 1-9 record across 10 December contents. But with the major pieces of the Sixers roster healthy and active they have won four of five heading into Friday night’s home game against the Pistons.
There are health concerns for the Detroit Pistons. Point guard Reggie Jackson (ankle) remains inactive and big-man Andre Drummond (ribs) is a game-time decision after being injured in practice on Tuesday. Detroit shooting guard and defensive stalwart Avery Bradley (groin) is playing through an injury and while he is active after missing seven games in December he isn’t 100 percent.
Philadelphia’s hybrid Ben Simmons is playing the best basketball of his professional career. The guard scored 11 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter on Wednesday and went 10-of-15 from the free-throw line in the contest. 76ers coach Brett Brown has schemed at getting Simmons more connected to being aggressive in favorable matchups against opposing guards and the game-plan has worked to perfection.
Without Jackson at the point the Sixers have a significant matchup edge in the backcourt. Ish Smith and Langston Galloway are receiving the minutes that Jackson gets when healthy leaving the combination of Ben Simmons and JJ Redick to have large numbers tonight vs the Pistons.
Philadelphia has beaten Detroit twice this season. An early season meeting saw Embiid and company register a 97-86 victory at Detroit in October. Followed by an early December 108-103 win at Wells Fargo.
