NBA Free Pick: Los Angeles Clippers at Toronto Raptors

NBA Playoffs Game #5 Propositions: Tuesday, April 25, 2017

It might be National Football League Championship Sunday, a double-header that will dominate the television market share today, but there are a number of interesting basketball matchups in the college and professional ranks that are noteworthy. The first place Atlantic Division Toronto Raptors host the second place Pacific Division L.A. Clippers today at Air Canada Centre in Ontario.

This Association contest will take place simultaneously with the NFC Championship game in Charlotte, North Carolina but that doesn’t make the event invisible. The Clippers are playing their third road game in four days and while it may appear that fading a squad that is 12-2 straight up and 10-4 against the spread in this span we all know what goes up must come down.

Los Angeles was hoping to see the return of Blake Griffin to active duty at some point on this road trip but the Clips big won’t dress or play today. The latest injury information on Griffin ( 23.2 points per game) is that his expected to return won’t happen until Tuesday, January 26th versus Indiana, at the earliest.

The last time the Los Angeles Clippers faced Toronto, the Thanksgiving holiday week, the LA squad scored a season low 80 points and were riding a 2-7 record in their last nine games, overall. Since that night they have founds ways to win, sometimes in poetic fashion, sometimes ugly.

Gameday Vitals
Los Angeles Clippers at Toronto Raptors (-2, 205.5)
Time: 6:00 PM ET, Sunday, January 24, 2016
Venue: Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Ontario

Clippers
The Clippers have outplayed most of the expectations since the injury to Griffin. They are in line to secure their 13th victory in 15 games, but they have to overcome matchup challenges and the fact that many of their veterans are feeling that mid-season leg fatigue that NBA players all deal with and tonight they play a Sunday night affair, their third game at a different venue, in the last four days.

The Clippers are 22-8 since that November game against Toronto and are coming off a ridiculously efficient contest that saw them put a 116-88 rout on the New York Knicks this past Friday.

The Clippers have a free flowing offense that ranks fourth in the NBA with 105.0 points per game. That average has spiked since Christmas. The team has put up more than 110 points per affair since Dec. 25. This has been executed without the services of Blake Griffin and his injured quad.

Los Angeles tweaked their game-day rotations early in the season by bringing in free-agents Josh Smith and Lance Stephenson but the duo is receiving limited time on the court during the successful run by head coach Doc Rivers. The Clippers have since, parted ways with Smith, who departed to Houston in exchange for cash and the draft rights to Sergei Lishouk.

Raptors
The Raptors don’t receive enough credit for their defensive intensity. Toronto is as red hot, or more so, than the Clippers as the team aims to extend its season-best win streak to eight today on the Air Canada hardwood. That Staples Center home defeat that the Raptors put on the Clippers, 91-80, was just one of two games this season in which the Clippers were held under 90 points. They were also held to 80 points in early December by another Eastern Conference club, the Chicago Bulls. The Clippers backcourt missed 25 of 32 3-point attempts in that December 10th loss to the Bulls.

The Raptors current seven-game winning streak is the longest for the franchise since the 2002 won nine in a row and this Toronto troupe is finding success with as much defensive effort as offensive efficiency. Toronto limited the Heat to 40 percent from the field on Friday night , including 4-of-17 from 3-point range in improving to 18-0 in its last 18 games when holding opponents under 100 points.

Outlook
The Toronto frontcourt, defensively, should have their way with DeAndre Jordan today with Griffin still sidelined. That Raptors middle of the floor defense is not only talented, but physical, with centers Jonas Valanciunas and Bismack Biyombo. The two bigs combined for five blocks in Friday’s 20-point win over the Miami Heat (who were without Whiteside)

The Clippers DeAndre Jordan had 20 points on 7-of-7 shooting against the Knicks in L.A.’s last contest but won’t be given a free pass to the rim in this Sunday night affair. The Raptors know how to defends Jordan and get into his head. Jordan earned a technical foul for protecting and defending Chris Paul after the point guard took a shot in the face from New York’s Robin Lopez in the third quarter at the Garden on Friday. The elbow that Paul received was responded to by the Clips big, Jordan, who shoved gave Lopez a cheap shot shove from behind after the incident. The two bigs went after each other again later in the game. A tussle that resulted in Jordan receiving a technical foul.

Toronto took advantage of a banged-up Miami Heat squad on Friday and will do the same to the Griffin-less Clippers that come into this Sunday night affair road and leg weary.

Free Pick: Toronto Raptors -2

NBA Best Bet: Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers

NBA 1st-Rd Playoff Preview and Free Pick: Cavs at Pacers

Well, this game just got a little more interesting, huh! Following Friday’s news of David Blatt’s dismissal, this will be Tyronn Lue’s first game as an NBA head coach. By all indications, Lue was LeBron James’ choice to lead the Cavs through the end of this season (and beyond). How will his debut go against a division rival? Saturday night’s primetime game is Bryan Leonard’s NBA Best Bet.

NBA Free Pick: Milwaukee Bucks at Miami Heat

NBA Preview and Prediction: Knicks vs. Thunder

The Milwaukee Bucks were perfect against the Miami Heat last year sweeping the season series 4-games-to-none. The Bucks look to make it five straight against the Heat tonight at American Airlines Arena in Miami. Milwaukee’s edge last season resulted in a double-digit average margin of victory and Tuesday’s contest is the first of three 2015-16 meetings

I’m recommending a play on Milwaukee plus the points on Tuesday night. Tough spot for the Heat who are home for one night before traveling to D.C.! Miami just finished a six-game, 10 day road trip and will have to pack up and hit the road again following this game. Miami has won just two of their last seven games SU, including a loss to New York in the final home game before heading out on the road.

Milwaukee has won three of their last four and six of 10, playing competitive basketball. They’re on a 10-5-1 ATS run, including four straight underdog covers, winning three of those games, outright. The Bucks have also covered four straight in this series, while the Heat are on a 7-22 ATS slide at home off a road trip of at least seven days.

(701)Milwaukee Bucks at (702)Miami Heat (-5.5, 192)
Time: 7:30 PM ET, Tuesday, January 19, 2016
Venue: American Airlines Arena, Miami, Florida

Good spot for the Bucks and we’ll back them on Tuesday night, plus the points.

THE PLAY: Milwaukee Bucks 5.5 (-108)

2015-2016 NBA Championship Odds: Warriors and Spurs odds-on chalk

Updated Odds to Win 2017 NBA Title Series

The Golden State Warriors 34-point win in Cleveland on Monday night has resulted in a shake-up of the 2016 NBA Futures charts to win the Association Championship outright. Warriors All-Star guard Stephen Curry scored 35 points in three quarters, Andre Iguodala added 20 and Golden State returned to the hardwood where it won the NBA championship last season and not only embarrassed the Cleveland Cavaliers 132-98 on Monday night, but the rout has created movement in the NBA futures.
