Hawks vs 76ers Game 3 Betting Preview

The Gold Sheet offers their NBA betting preview for Friday night’s Eastern Conference playoff showdown between the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers. After capturing Game 2 to tie the series 1-1, Philadelphia is a -1.5 road favorite in Atlanta tonight with the total sitting at 224.5 points.

The Hawks could teach the Falcons or Braves something about making the hometown advantage work; Trae Young & Co. have now won 13 straight in the ATL after pasting the Knicks twice in the first round, bringing the Hawks’ SU win streak to 13 (11-2 vs. the line in those games; 11-0 vs. teams not named the Wizards) at State Farm Arena. Granted, none of the wins in that recent streak came against Philly; then again the only time this season that the Sixers trekked to Atlanta, they were soundly beaten by 18 points back on Jan. 11. That was during the ill-fated Lloyd Pierce era for the Hawks, which was humanely terminated at the end of February; since then ATL is 33-13 SU for replacement Nate McMillan, who figures to have the interim label removed as soon as the Hawks conclude this season—even if it’s after the Finals. Which is not much of a stretch considering how Atlanta recovered from 21-point deficit to take the lead well into the 2nd half of Game 2, threatening to walk out of Philly with a 2-0 series lead. Here’s the problem for Doc Rivers; his bench has not been able to keep the proceedings competitive, reaching a nadir in the first half of Game 2 when the reserves didn’t score a point.

To the rescue, however, road an unsuspecting hero, 6-5 wing Shake Milton, recently out-of-favor but providing the spark Philly needed on Tuesday with 14 clutch points (including four key triples) in just 14 minutes of court time, including keying a late Sixers surge after they had squandered the aforementioned big lead. Whether Milton (who barely scored 3 ppg in the opening round vs. the Wizards, and only on the floor for 1 minute in Game 1) can do so again remains to be seen, though we do know that Joel Embiid has been healthy enough to net almost 40 ppg across the first two meetings when Philly hit nearly 54% from the floor.

With Tobias Harris and Seth Curry canning nearly 60% of their FG tries between them in the first two games, scoring hasn’t been the Sixers’ problem. But even after their bounce-back win in Game 2, the Sixers still seem to be struggling against ATL’s version of the pick-and-roll, while the mercurial Young is likely to recover from a rare off night with his long-range radar (just 1 for 7 triples) in Game 2. Summing up, Atlanta’s recent home success suggests it would be no surprise if the Hawks replicate their Game 1 win, though we think the case for the “over” (which has cashed in 7 of the Sixers’ last 9 games) is at least as persuasive. Play Hawks and Sixers-Hawks “Over”
