Jazz vs Clippers Game 2 Betting Preview
The Gold Sheet offers their NBA betting preview for Thursday night’s Western Conference playoff showdown between the Utah Jazz and the LA Clippers. The Clippers had the chance to steal Game 1 in Salt Lake City, but, to his credit, Jazz star Donovan Mitchell was right when he told his teammates that the Clippers wouldn’t have it late after going seven games with Dallas.

Mitchell (45 points in the 112-109 Utah win) and his Jazz teammates held off a late Los Angeles surge, going from a 109-100 lead with under 3:00 to play to 112-109 in the final 18 seconds, only holding on for victory when Rudy Gobert blocked Marcus Morris’ 3-pointer that would’ve sent the game into overtime. Now LA has had a few days to refocus and undoubtedly have discussed the “miked-up” Mitchell’s disparaging comments broadcast on National TV in the first go-round.
Tyronn Lue and his Clips do not want to go down 0-2 to Utah, and they have the talent to avoid that as demonstrated by a 3-0 mark at Dallas in the first round. Even average shooting nights from LA stars Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and strongman Morris would’ve won the first game, as those three made just 17 of 50 shots. The Clippers can and will make some adjustments defensively on Mitchell, with defensive specialists Leonard and George keeping a fresh body on him, and there might be another DeMarcus Cousins sighting, as he was actually having an impact in the 2nd quarter (6 pts., 3 rebs. and a block in 4 minutes) before the referees shafted him with 3 quick fouls and he lost his cool and sat for the duration of the game. Utah was amazing during the regular season, but the Clippers compare favorably statistically to the Jazz, just a tick behind in both offensive and defensive efficiency.
Mike Conley is questionable for Game 2 (mild right hamstring strain).

While we realize the Vivint Smart Home Arena has been a bit of a house of horrors for Steve Ballmer’s hoops team (please Steve, don’t dance anymore, it just brings out your inner nerd), as LA has dropped its last six SU as a visitor in this series, but note that the Jazz only have 7 covers in the last 16 home games against the Clippers. Utah sixth man Jordan Clarkson, who shot 45% before the all-star break, has made just 39% of his shots and 29% of his treys in the playoffs, and underrated PG Mike Conley is still questionable with a hamstring (he was also listed that way before missing the first game of the series). Conley has been an important cog on Quin Snyder’s Utah squad, leading the team in assists and steals, while ranking among the top 3 three-point shooters on the most 3-happy team in the league (Jazz led the NBA in makes and attempts from beyond the arc). That being said, the Clippers made 16 of 42 treys in the first game of the series, compared with Utah’s 17 of 50.
LA did a nice defensive job on Joe Ingles (just 3 of 12 FGs in Game One) and Bojan Bogdanovic (6 of 14), and should have a fresher, more focused outlook on the series and this game in particular. The “under” cashed in last 4 in series played in Salt Lake City, and only one of last seven in this series went over the total. Play the Clippers and the Under.
