Odds to Win 2019 Big Dance
The final weekend of the 2018-19 college basketball regular season is in the books. It is also safe to state that with this there were a number of games that solidified seeds for specific schools regardless of the conference tournament results. The March 17th date for the NCAA committee for next weekend’s Selection Sunday sits at six days and counting. Odds to Win 2019 Big Dance: Auburn Tigers 100-1.
With North Carolina completing an ACC regular season sweep of college basketball national championship favorite Duke (9-4) they figure to be one of the top four seeds without a postseason league championship. Furthermore it is difficult to argue that Virginia and Gonzaga won’t relinquish their project No. 1 spots win or lose this week.
The fourth and final No. 1 seed that will be announced on Sunday figures to be Duke, Kentucky or Tennessee. Many will argue that Michigan State is in the Big Dance mix for the fourth top seed but not according to my College Hoop Power Rankings.
Case for final No. 1 Seed
It is easier to make an argument for the Auburn Tigers to earn a top spot in one of the regionals than that of the Michigan State Spartans. This if one or both of the pair win their conference tourney’s. And note that the current 100-1 odds on the Tigers to win College Basketball’s National Championship is easily the most value-packed on Westgate’s current futures chart.
Cassius Winston and the Spartans will be downgraded without the injured Joshua Langford and Nick Ward.
For the case of Auburn; the Tigers won four in a row to close the regular season with one of those victories coming against Tennessee. Their body of work, résumé, as a whole trumps that of the Spartans. According to the new NET rankings and KenPom.com efficiency metrics a victory by Auburn in the SEC tourney would place them above Michigan State in the committee’s final team rankings this upcoming Sunday.
