Kentucky head coach John Calipari went into the round-of-64 with the belief his squad could survive and advance without the services of their leading scorer and rebounder, P.J. Washington. With Washington sidelined by a sprained foot, second-seeded Kentucky coasted to a first half and game cover and easily took down Abilene Christian by a 79-44 final on Thursday night. Kentucky survives and advances without Washington
The Wildcats shot 60 percent in the first stanza and went to the locker-room with a 39-13 first half lead. The performance by the ‘Cats without Washington softened any qualms that a No. 15 would once again upset a No. 2. in a round-of-64 “Dance” matchup.
The victory and the abase of active status for Washington is still a question mark going forward for Calapari and his staff. However, in the postgame presser the coach called his top scorer and rebounder unlikely for Saturday’s contest against upstart Wofford.
Wofford was at their best in their opening round win over Seton Hall. The 84-68 victory over the Pirates was much closer than the final score. The Big East Bucs were down must three point in the final minutes of the eventual loss.
Behind 24 points from sharp-shooter Fletcher Magee, who hit seven 3-pointers in the victory, the Terriers shot nearly 50 percent from the floor overall and 46 percent from distance (13-28 from 3-point line), but could never pull away from Myles Powell and the Pirates.
Back to the Saturday business at hand “If they take (the cast) off tomorrow to check him, he might be able to play,” Calipari told the media. “If they don’t, he won’t play Saturday. Then, they would probably take it off Tuesday or Wednesday,” giving Washington a chance to play if the Wildcats advance to the second weekend.
Wofford presents a challenge for the Wildcats. But only in the perimeter shooting variable. The Terriers are significantly overmatched athletically and will need to repeat their box score metrics against Seton Hall to keep this game close.
