Longtime rivals Minnesota and Green Bay are scheduled to kickoff at Lambeau Field at 1:00 p.m. ET this afternoon and all of the important pieces to each team’s success are expected to dress and play. Early this morning Aaron Rodgers was cleared to start. NFC North Preview and Free Pick: Packers vs Vikings.

Game Preview

Teams: (265) Minnesota Vikings at (266) Green Bay Packers
Time and Date: 1:00 PM ET, Sunday, September 16, 2018
Venue: Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin
Line: Minnesota -2, 45
TV Broadcast: Fox Sports

Rodgers injured his left knee during the season-opening win at Soldier Field in Chicago and was limited in practice this week. Rodgers was helped from the game a week ago before returning to orchestrate a second-half comeback in the 24-23 victory.

After one week the Vikings’ offseason acquisition of quarterback Kirk Cousins looks to offer the franchise a solid return on investment.

Minnesota Vikings

Cousins passed for 244 yards and two touchdowns connecting with wide receiver Adam Thielen six times for 102 yards. Like the Packers the Vikings head into this divisional matchup off of a 24-16 victory against San Francisco. While Cousins is key to the offensive success of HC Mike Zimmer’s offense it is the Minnesota defense that determines wins or losses for the team.

The Vikings showcased their dominant defense against 49ers upstart signal caller Jimmy Garoppolo. Note that each of the Vikings defensive players recorded an official tackle, a team effort from a defensive unit that is seemingly always prepared on Sunday. The aforementioned especially applies when the Vikings and Packers hook up.

Green Bay Packers

Without Rodgers the Packers are suspect at best. Backup quarterback DeShone Kizer is a difficult field general to back in most game day situations but against the Vikings and their success at Lambeau even more so. Rodgers will dress and start and even he, an All-Pro, will find open receivers difficult on Sunday afternoon.

Wide receiver Randall Cobb received a large number of looks last week in Chicago due to top wide out Davante Adams playing through a shoulder ailment. Running back Jamaal Williams averaged 3.1 yards per carry on 15 totes in the Packers’ comeback win. Ty Montgomery had only two carries for seven yards and caught two passes, as well, for 21 yards. Neither Williams nor Montgomery profile to a game star via the ground in Week 2 against the Vikings.

Today’s “Black and Blue” divisional battle results in a game of chess between Mike McCarthy and Zimmer. Dalvin Cook will be the primary weapon of the Vikings offense today, much like he was on Soldier Field turf. It was Cook’s first game action in almost a year after tearing his left ACL last September.

Minnesota officially recorded 26 quarterback pressures against the 49ers a week ago. And for all intent and purpose the Vikings defensive line dominated the finesse front five of the 49ers.

The Vikings are 4-2 in their last six games against the Pack and have outscored Rodgers and company over that span of contests. Minnesota won both meetings last year. The Packers were held shutout in the last tango these two took part in, Week #16 last season, and the Vikings defense has contained Rodgers and Green Bay to less than 14 points in the other three wins across the last three seasons.

Don’t expect a large number of offensive yards or points in this NFC North battle.
