2019 NFL No. 1 Draft Pick Odds
The Las Vegas SuperBook, Westgate, opened their NFL Future odds on the 2019 National Football League overall No. 1 draft pick. And the world’s largest book did so with impeccable timing. For the most part every NFL major media Big Board the past month listed Ohio State’s linebacker Nick Bosa as the top selection in the upcoming draft. In short those watching this year’s draft on the NFL Network expected to hear commissioner Roger Goodell or a special guest announce that the Arizona Cardinals have selected Nick Bosa as the overall No. 1 pick. Not so fast, my friends… 2019 NFL No. 1 Draft Pick Odds: Cardinals select Murray?
After the NFL Scouting Combine the player market moved. In the way of issuing Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray the top stock for the upcoming draft. Throughout the past week the reported news out of Indianapolis quoted agents, scouts, coaches and general managers touting they believed Murray would be the top overall pick.
If in fact the combine talk rings true then it is likely that former Texas Tech head coach and now-Arizona bench boss Kliff Kingsbury, who recruited Murray to be his quarterback out of high school, would follow suit. And in turn make the Heisman winner the Cardinals No. 1 selection.
And for those that believe head coaches don’t make the picks on draft day, think again. Yes, typically head coaches in the NFL that have the most influence in the selection of rookie player personnel are veteran bosses. However if the Cardinals franchise had enough faith in a fired college coach, at his alma mater mind you, to choreograph the team and offense at the professional level one must believe they would want that person’s input. After all Kingsbury isn’t just the head coach he will engineer the offense and call the plays.
Do Cardinals Dare?
Would the Arizona front office, who went all in and drafted UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen a year ago, pick a signal-caller at No. 1, just a year later? A player selection that required the team trade up to get?
If the scenario I outlined above comes to fruition expect the Cardinals to either trade Rosen during the draft or shop him this summer. There are a number of organizations looking for a franchise quarterback, e.g. the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants.
