Super Bowl 54 Opening Lines from Vegas
At halftime of Sunday night’s NFC Championship Game, opening lines for Super Bowl 54 began to trickle out and most oddsmakers had a pretty easy job: The game opened as a pick’em and by Monday morning has settled in at Kansas City -1 at most shops. After both conference championship games went comfortably over the total, it’s no surprise to see a high number for the Super Bowl. The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook opened at 51.5 but has been bet up to 54 at most locations.

Looking at historical Super Bowl trends is fun, but make sure you’re putting everything in the proper context. The over is 27-25 in the Super Bowl (there was no total in Super Bowl 1). But seven of the first eight Super Bowls with a total went under. So the over has actually done quite well in the Super Bowl when you’re looking at more of the modern era.
Favorites have gone 27-23-2 against the spread (Seattle vs. New England in 2015 was a universal pick’em). But favorites covered 11 of the first 14 Super Bowls. So underdogs have done quite well in more recent years. It’s tough to draw too many similarities between today’s game and betting market with those played in the mid-1970s.
