2020 NFL Predictions, Odds and Betting Tips: AFC East

AFC East Betting Preview from Las Vegas

For the first time in two decades, the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins do not have to worry about Tom Brady. The former New England quarterback has fled the AFC East for Tampa Bay, and the race to find the division’s next superstar is on. Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa is 22 years old. New York’s Sam Darnold is 23. Brady’s replacement in New England, Jarrett Stidham, will turn 24 in August. Buffalo’s Josh Allen is 24. Who will assume the crown that Brady has left behind?

Odds to win the AFC East from Caesars Sports Book as of Monday, June 15:

Buffalo Bills Even
New England Patriots +145
New York Jets +700
Miami Dolphins +800

Buffalo made the biggest offseason splash by acquiring wide receiver Stefon Diggs from Minnesota. Diggs joins a Buffalo offense that was No. 28 in passing success rate last season, according to Sharp Football Stats.

Using regular season win totals as the barometer, the New York Jets will play the third-hardest schedule in the league. The Jets start the season with a trip to Buffalo and a visit from the defending NFC champs in San Francisco, then finish the season at Seattle, at the LA Rams, home against Cleveland and at New England.

Regular season win totals from Caesars Sports Book as of Monday, June 15:

Buffalo Bills: 9 Wins (Over -115 / Under -105)
New England Patriots: 9 Wins (Over +130 / Under -150)
New York Jets: 6.5 Wins (Over -130 / Under +110)
Miami Dolphins: 6 Wins (Over -115 / Under -105)

I’m pretty intrigued by the Coach of the Year market for this division. You could build a pretty strong narrative around a handful of reasonable scenarios. If the Patriots win the AFC East without Tom Brady, surely Bill Belichick (+1750 at Circa Sports) will receive a lot of the credit. Belichick has not won Coach of the Year in the last decade. Halfway through last season, the Miami Dolphins were regarded as one of the worst teams in NFL history. If Brian Flores (+3000) can get them to .500, he will definitely be in the mix for the award. Sam Darnold missed significant time for the Jets last season, but he showed some flashes of promise when he was on the field. If Adam Gase (+5000) is able to get a full season out of Darnold and the Jets make a run at the division, he’ll have the backing of the New York media.
