Can the 49ers Knock Off the Packers on Monday Night Football?

The San Francisco 49ers head east for a Monday Night battle with the Green Bay Packers from historic Lambeau Field. The 49ers are coming in with a three game losing streak, running concurrent with losing Jimmy Garrapolo for the year with an ACL. The Green Bay Packers have alternated wins and losses this year, with a tie thrown in for good measure, and lost to the Detroit Lions on the road last week. Green Bay is a -9 point favorite for the Monday night game.

49ers Hurt All Over Field

San Francisco has fallen on hard times since losing Garrapolo, as they have turned to University of Iowa product C.J. Beathard to keep their playoff hopes alive. Beathard has been serviceable, completing 63% of his passes with 4 touchdowns and 4 picks, including a 349 yard performance last week against the Cardinals. The 49ers may get a boost on the offensive side of the ball, as Matt Breida is expected to return. However, the biggest challenge when heading to Lambeau will be the play off the defense.

San Francisco currently ranks 20th in points against and are in the bottom four of the league in both sacks and interceptions. The 49ers are giving up an average of 33 points in their last three losses. That is a number that the pedestrian 49er offense just cannot keep up with. The 49ers will have to put some points on the board to keep pace with Aaron Rodgers and company. Yardage was not a problem for San Francisco in the Arizona game last week, as they amassed over 500 yards and 33 first downs, but their inability to put points on the board cost them a very winnable game.

Packers Looking to Get Back on Track

Green Bay is good when Aaron Rodgers plays, there is no doubt about that. However, Rodgers has not been able to shake all the talk about his injured knee, but a hobbled Rodgers should still be able to beat this San Francisco team. The Packers were set to move to 3-1-1 last week but suffered a historic collapse by kicker Mason Crosby that led to a road loss to the Detroit Lions. Instead, they are right in the muddled middle of the NFC North behind the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings.

Rodgers was brilliant against the Lions, finishing with 442 yards and 3 touchdowns. He aired the ball out 52 times in a game that the Packers trailed 24-0 at halftime. Overall, the Packers offense has been good, ranking 5th in the league in yards per game but the biggest surprise around this team has been their defense. The Packers defense was expected to be down this year, especially after some big early injuries, but they have answered the call as they rank 6th in the league in points allowed. If you can hold the opponent to a low number, Aaron Rodgers will always give you a chance to win.

Packers Roll 49ers

Speaking of low numbers, that is what the 49ers should have on Monday night. The Packers win this one comfortably and cover the spread, 31-13.
