For the second straight year NFL fans will be treated to a regular season rematch of the previous season’s Super Bowl. The Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers redo was played out in the season opening Thursday Night Football contest last year. However the league’s front office scheduled this year’s rematch closer to mid-season. NFL Week 7 Early Lines from Vegas: Patriots -4 over Falcons!
The Falcons get a chance to avenge their Super Bowl 51 meltdown. This late October contest offers the Falcons an opportunity at revenge against the Patriots when the two sides square off at Gillette Stadium. The 2017 Super Sunday rematch is an NBC Sports prime-time Sunday Night Football event.
The Patriots defeated the Falcons by a 34-28 margin in overtime of Super Bowl LI in Houston. A victory after the Falcons held a 28-3 lead. The brilliance and reputation of head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady came shining through for all to see. Coach B, Tom Terrific and teammates recorded the biggest comeback in Super Sunday history.
While the Falcons fan faithful attempted to make sense of the 25-point comeback most just enjoyed the game. The Vegas and Offshore audience were, as always, vested in the favorites and “over” the total. With Brady and his offense especially patient in the game the favorite and over result didn’t look probable early on.
Even trailing 21–0 late in the second quarter the Pats offense was still focused on the run. However, once New England found themselves trailing 28–3 the running game was abandoned. Consequently the Patriots won because they wore the Falcons down. Atlanta’s defense was visibly gassed in the final stages of the game because the Patriots ran 93 plays (40:31 of possession) to the Falcons’ 46 (23:27).
This particular Super Bowl rematch will begin receiving overwhelming attention and national coverage as soon as the Week #6 contests conclude. Count on a plethora of sports anchors rehashing the game while offering their opinions on what went right for the Patriots and wrong for the Falcons. And doing so to the point of nausea.
The NFL Week #7 slate offers up a number of intriguing matchups outside of this SNF contest at Gillette.
- NFC West foes Arizona and the LA Rams are in London for an early Sunday kickoff.
- Kansas City visits Oakland on Thursday Night in an AFC West showdown.
- Offensive minded Drew Brees and the Saints take to Lambeau Field in a game against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.
- And the new favorites to win the NFC East, Philadelphia, host divisional rival Washington on Monday Night.
While its reasonable that the Falcons will be motivated by a number of factors to be at their best, especially defensively against the reigning champs, revenge will also play a role. However, going into Foxborough and coming away with a victory against Tom and Bill is never easy.
