Buster’s Top-10 NHL Teams (Dec. 9 – 15)

This is the best team in the league right now and truthfully, it does not look like anyone is close. They have only lost 4 games in regulation all year. They just finished the very tough Western road trip and are on a 6 game winning streak. No matter what they do this week with their 3 games they will be still Number 1 on our list next week. There will be a couple of must see games as they face Boston and Tampa Bay this week.

The Bruins have lost their last 2 games but before that had won 8 straight. They hold their number 2 spot as there is no doubt they are the second best team in hockey at this time. This week will be very interesting for the Bruins as they head out on a 4 game road trip , playing all games in 6 days. Three of the games are going to be really tough, as they go to Washington, Tampa Bay and Florida. This club has been so good this year even if they go 1-3 they will keep the second spot on our list.

The NYI will hold pat at number 3 this week again as we will reward them one more week for such a good run. They can hear the footsteps of the Flyers and the Penguins as they trail Washington in the Metro. The Islanders have had a rough time of late as they are now 4-4 in their last 8 games. They have 3 games this week and they continue their 3 game road trip with stops in Tampa Bay and Florida. They will only keep their spot if they win 2 out of 3 and anything less drops them down the list.

The Avalanche stay at Number 4 but only because we believe the Islanders deserve one more week in their spot. This team has now won 8 out of 10 games and they played great while they were shorthanded with injuries. In the last week and a half they got the good news that Miko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog and Andre Burakovsky were back and playing. We will not be surprised to see this club continue to be really good and eventually move up our list. The Avalanche are on a 3 game home stand this week and we don’t see them losing their spot in Number 4 anytime soon. If the islanders falter, they will be 3 next week.

The Blues have been hanging in there even with all their injuries as they still lead the Central with the Avalanche breathing down their neck. They get a break and move up to Number 5 on the list as Tampa Bay dropped from Number 5 and right out of our list with their constant just brutal hockey. It will be interesting to see how much fight these guys have left in them having been shorthanded for so long now. I said this 2 weeks ago and the Blues responded by winning 4 out of 6 games. We are very impressed at this clubs bend but not break attitude. They play 3 games this week and two of them at home. They will stay on our list for sure next week. Where they will be situated will depend on the results of the week.

The Arizona Coyotes are the surprise team of the year so far and with their win in a SO on Sunday and Edmonton’s loss on Sunday, they now are tied for the lead in the Pacific. They will jump the Oilers in our Top 10 list as they simple are playing better hockey than the Oilers. They just finished a 4 game road trip in which they won 3 out of 4 games. It is very important in this league to be able to win on the road and this club has one of the best road records in the NHL. They still are getting great goaltending from Raanta and Kuemper and as long as this is the case, they will be on our list for quite some time. They play 3 home games this week and as long as they win two out of those 3 they will keep their spot.

The Oilers stay in their number 7 spot as they still are tied a top of the Pacific with the Arizona Coyotes. The Oilers have now lost 4 out of their last 6 games and they would have dropped a spot however Dallas has also had a tough week or so. The Oilers are really struggling to score goals of late and we believe they need to get back to the type of play that opens it up a bit. We know HC Tippett is defensive minded but there was a 5 game stretch in November that they opened up offensively and they took 7 out of 10 points. The Oilers have 3 games this week and two of them are at home. If they do not open it up and let that speed take over some games, they no doubt will be falling from our list.

The Dallas Stars have now won two straight games after losing 4 in a row. The same reasons they struggled last year are starting to come up again, as they continue to have trouble scoring goals. They have actually scored only 10 goals in their last 6 games and if the offense does not start to improve, they will find themselves off our list sooner than later. The goaltending continues to be stellar with Bishop leading the way. They continue their 4 game home stand this week with two more at home and then play one on the road. They will need to win 2 out of the 3 to keep their spot, as they have numerous clubs knocking at the door to take their spot on the list.

The Jets will move up a spot on the list with Tampa Bay falling completely out and with a new club coming to the 10th spot. The reason they stay behind Dallas is that they have lost 2 out of 3 to the Stars in the last couple of weeks. In saying that they have been playing fantastic hockey and only Dallas has had their number of late. If you excuse the 2 losses to Dallas the Jets have won 9 out of the other 10 games. They play 3 games this week with a home and home against lowly Detroit. We see this club still at the bottom end of our list next week but should easily win 2 out of their 3 games.

The Penguins join our list this week as they have been playing some solid hockey with a bunch of injuries. The Penguins have now won 6 out of 8 games and they have been very good at home. This has been key to their success as they have won 6 out of their last 7 at home. In their last 3 games they have allowed only 3 goals as G Tristan Jarry played lights out and had 2 shutouts. The Penguins play 3 home games this week and the way they have been playing at home a 3-0 home stand would not surprise.
