Philadelphia Flyers at Columbus Blue Jackets Preview & Prediction

Prior to the start of every NHL season, we usually have a pretty solid idea of the teams that will be battling it out for the playoff spots in each conference. There are, though, some teams that are going to underperform, and while we have a few of those teams already showing up right now, there is still plenty of time for those preseason favorites to get their act together and get back in the race. When good teams struggle, though, it opens the door for a few dark horse teams to step through. There is still a lot of jockeying for position going on in what is still the relatively early stages of the season, which means that we might still see an unexpected team rise and take a run at the postseason. The Philadelphia Flyers are currently sitting in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but there are a lot of teams within reach, one of whom is the Columbus Jackets, who the Flyers will hit the road to face on Wednesday night. Columbus are favored by 1 ½ at home, with the goal total for this one set at 5 ½.

Why bet on the Philadelphia Flyers

If the regular season was to end today, the Philadelphia Flyers would be in as the #8 seed in the Eastern Conference, as they currently hold the final Wild Card spot. They are sitting on 29 points from 24 games, courtesy of a 12-7-5 record. The bad news for the Flyers is that they have been a whole lot better at home than they have been on the road, where they are game below .500 at 5-6-1. The Flyers have gone 5-2-3 in their last 10 games, but they have dropped 3 games in their last 5. They are coming off a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks, so they will be looking to keep their winning run alive. In their previous meeting this season, the Flyers beat Columbus 7-4 on home ice.

Why bet on the Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets have a winning record at 10-9-4 on the season, but the strength of the Eastern Conference has them sitting down near the bottom with 24 points. The good news is that they are just 5 points back of the final Wild Card spot, which is currently being held by the Flyers, so a win here would get them to within 3, assuming that win comes in regulation. Columbus has certainly looked like a better team when playing at home, going 7-5-1 through their opening 13 games on home ice. They too are coming off a win and are now 5-4-1 over their last 10 games. In games against teams from the Metropolitan Division, the Jackets have seen the UNDER hit in 9 of their last 12 meetings.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

The Flyers were pretty convincing winners the last time these two met, but I think we are looking at a different scenario with this game set to be played in Columbus. I am taking the Blue Jackets to win and am also taking a shot at them covering the spread.
