The Villanova Wildcats remain the Vegas and Offshore sportsbooks favorites to win the 2018 college basketball championship but the Virginia Cavaliers are currently playing the best basketball in Division I. Odds to Win 2018 College Basketball National Championship (Feb 6).
The ACC Cavaliers and head coach Tony Bennett are now 7-to-1 to win the final 2017-18 college hoops event in April. Virginia rests behind Villanova (7-to-2), Michigan State (4-to-1) and Duke (9-to-2) on the Westgate College Basketball Futures chart. However, according to ESPN Virginia owns the No #1 RPI as of February 6. Nova and head coach Jay Wright have the second best RPI followed by Xavier, Clemson and Auburn, who round out the Top-5.
Virginia is 11-0 in the ACC and have a commanding three-game lead on the conference’s second-place Clemson and reside three-and-one-half games ahead of Duke, four-and-one-half games in front of Miami (Fla.) and North Carolina State The Cavaliers are also five-games ahead of North Carolina who are the reigning NCAAB champs.
Tony Bennett’s team is now 22-1 overall, owns the nation’s No. 1 RPI but continue to get diminished, but expected respect in the public perception container, from most Vegas and Offshore sportsbook oddmakers.
While it isn’t a mathematical given it is more than likely that the Cavaliers and Bennett are going to win the ACC championship in 2017-18.
It is noteworthy to remind college basketball March Madness investors that past Bennett teams have been as good as this year’s crew. Outside of statistical fanatics and ACC followers that the Cavs won conference titles in 2014 and 2015. And while they didn’t claim the league crown last season they did win their way into the 2016 Elite Eight.
All things being equal what Bennett has done at Virginia is nothing short of amazing. Try and convince Coack K, Bill Self’s or Cal’s blue-chip player personnel to defend at a high level and play at the tempo that Bennett’s boys do. These factors alone make Bennett the favorite to win College Basketball Coach of the Year in both the ACC and Division I hoops this season.
Most noteworthy, however, is that cutting down the nets in March is much different than doing so in April. Evidence of such comes in the form of Self’s Jayhawks who have won 13 straight Big 12 titles have played the final game in April only twice in the last thirteen seasons.
