The Columbus Blue Jackets escaped Game #1 the victor. The Jackets were down two goals, as well, three forwards, but left the Capital One Arena ice with a Game # win. Columbus’ Artemi Panarin scored 6:02 into overtime to give the Blue Jackets a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night.
If Washington is to even the series with a Sunday victory they need more from Alex Ovechkin, the team’s top scoring threat. Ovechkin, who led the NHL with 49 goals and the Capitals with 87 points during the regular season, failed to register a point in 4-3 overtime loss.
Ovechkin registered over 25 minutes of ice time in Game #1. He had four shots on goal and eight shot attempts. Three of his eight shots came with a man-advantage.
Coach Barry Trotz told the Washington media after Thursday’s loss that he believed the team needed more from Ovechkin.
“I didn’t think he had a big impact on the game,” Trotz told NHL.com. “And [Ovechkin] is a top player for us, so he has to have impact, and I don’t think he had enough impact. We actually were talking about that, and he felt that he can impact the game a lot more. When he does, you know the results. So, just get skating again. To me, when he’s skating and really moving, then he’s always dangerous.”
