The lone North American Sports league where the cliché the “rich get richer” most applies to is Major League Baseball. The MLB free-agency period officially opened Monday and between now and February the big name free agent player personnel will primarily be signed by the larger market franchises. Odds to Win 2018 World Series: Free Agency is on.

The long and tenuous period of free agents in Major League Baseball move slowly. And it does so due to a number of variables. One of the top reasons for the patience of the players is because of the philosophy of their agents. Super Agents, e.g. Scott Boras, believe timing is everything. The top players have the top or most successful agents and the rule of thumb in the MLB market is “make ’em sweat”.

The most overrated positional players are typically the later offseason signings. This being sluggers and the shallowest of baseball positions, pitchers. These two groups typically wait till just prior to or at the beginning of spring training resulting in the most lucrative deals.

The rich will get richer while the small market teams like Kansas City are on the verge of starting over. A rebirth if you will, developing their farm system into potential champions. The Royals are likely to lose Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar this winter. All four players are free agents and the small-market Royals don’t have the wherewithal to be fiscally responsible and compete for their services.

Royals beat writer Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star reported the team is willing to spend to sign Hosmer long-term. ” Kansas City wants to retain Hosmer at a reasonable price and sees him as a fit for whatever the organization decides to do moving forward”, according to Dodd.

Dodd reminded his readers that Hosmer’s agent, Scott Boras, is reported asking for a $200 million deal for Hosmer. This kind of asking price is out of reach for MLB clubs save the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs or the Los Angeles Dodgers.
