The worldwide leader in sports will broadcast the 2017 Potato Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon, December 22. The game between the Cowboys and the Chippewas will be held on the smurf-turf of Albertsons Stadium on the campus of Boise State. Potato Bowl Spread: Wyoming -1 over Central Michigan.
The 21st Famous Idaho Potato Bowl features two newcomers to the holiday affair. Neither the Cowboys (7-5, 5-3 Mountain West) nor the Chippewas (8-4, 6-2 Mid-American) have taken part in the bowl in their school’s history.
Wyoming comes into the pre-Christmas contest, the school’s second straight bowl, as short favorites. Most notable is that the Cowboys’ players have the advantage of being familiar with the blue-turf and the game-day surroundings. Wyoming has played once on the Boise State field this season, however, in a losing 24-14 effort against the Broncos.
Central Michigan enters the Potato Bowl on a five-game winning streak. And the strength of the Chippewas squad is their defense. CMU lead’s the country with 31 forced turnovers this season. In addition there is question marks surrounding the availability of Wyoming’s start quarterback Josh Allen. The NFL prospect injured his right (throwing) shoulder in a win against Air Force, and Wyoming has lost two straight without the All-American. Consequently Allen might well skip the bowl contest as he is projected as a potential first-round NFL draft pick.
Furthermore this bowl is known as a cold-weather event and last year’s contest tied for the sixth-coldest in bowl history with a kickoff temperature of 22 degrees.
The Vegas and Offshore oddsmakers opened the contest at a pick. Since Sunday’s initial lines were posted Wyoming has moved to a position as a short minus-one point favorite with a total of 46 points.
