By far the most famous match-up of the round is the one between Real Madrid and Manchester City on Wednesday. Real Madrid have just lost Hazard for the season, while Manchester City will most likely not play European soccer after this season. This is bound to be an exciting match with a ton of star players taking the field.

Real Madrid will be looking to find some stability ahead of their home match against Manchester City. They are coming into this match having won just one of their last four (1-2-1), conceding eight goals in that span. Real Madrid had a pretty easy job in the group stage, finishing 2nd with 11 points (3-1-2), eight points ahead of the 3rd. They have won just three of their last nine European matches at home though (3-3-3). Even so, they have lost just four of their last 49 Champions League matches at home (37-4-8). Real Madrid have done greatly in two-legged ties against English sides, wining 8 of 12. They have a 8-1-4 record against English sides lately. And they have been great as hosts too (8-2-6).
On the other hand, Manchester City were also in a pretty easy group and comfortably finished at the top (4-0-2). In their last 15 Champions League matches they now have a record of 11-1-3, scoring 45 and conceding 14 goals in the process. Moreover, they have scored 30 goals in their last ten such matches, a solid average of 3 goals per match. This will be their seventh appearance in the round of 16, with a balanced W3 L3 record prior to this season. Manchester City have not fared well in two-legged ties against Spanish sides, winning just one of five (W1 L4). Moreover, they have never won the away match in such ties (0-4-1). That also means that they have won just two of their last ten matches on Spanish soil (2-7-1).
The two teams met in the semi-finals of the 2015/16 edition, where after a goal-less draw in Manchester it was Real who progressed with a 0-1 win here. The two teams had also met in the group stage of the 2011/12 season, where Real won by 2-3 here before a 1-1 draw in Manchester. Call me crazy but I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw few goals here.
