The last three meetings at Southampton have ended all square – including goalless draws in the last two. West Ham have never won a game at St Mary’s Stadium (D4, L2), scoring just two goals. Their last win away to Southampton was a 3-2 victory at The Dell in November 2000, which was also the last season they did the league double over Saints.
Saints have won their last three Premier League home games, scoring nine unanswered goals. Southampton have registered four consecutive Premier League clean sheets – they last kept five in a row back in 2001 during an eventual run of seven games without conceding.
West Ham have lost just one of their last 13 games in league and cup (W5, D7). After winning four of their first five Premier League away games this season, the Hammers have won just one of the last seven on the road (D3, L3).
We can only assume that the return of West Ham’s most valuable player and contender for player of the season Dmitri Payet, is the reason behind all the sharp action on the Hammers. On paper this looks an incredibly tight looking fixture to call. But the wise money suggests otherwise, with a clear West Ham win the preferred bet.
