While it may be tempting to grab Richard Sherman or Tyrann Mathieu at 80-to-1, history suggests that the winner is likely going to come from the offensive side of the ball. A defensive player has won the award in nine out of 53 opportunities. Most recently, linebacker Malcolm Smith won the award with the Seahawks in 2014 and Denver’s Von Miller captured the award in 2016. Not surprisingly, quarterbacks have won the award nearly 55-percent of the time. Quarterbacks have won nine out of the last 13 MVP trophies. Only once has a player won the award on a team that lost the game: Dallas’ Chuck Howley in 1971.
