Was there something fishy going on in North Carolina over the weekend? The Tennis Integrity Unit is investigating Alexandr Dolgopolov’s match against Thiago Monteiro at the Winston-Salem Open on Sunday night. Dolgopolov, who was once ranked No. 13 in the world, lost to Monteiro 6-3, 6-3 in a match that most offshore bookmakers pulled off the board due to suspicious betting activity. This is not the kind of story that tennis fans and officials want to hear before the US Open, which starts next week.
At the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, Roger Federer is a +125 favorite in the men’s draw, followed by Rafael Nadal (+250), Alexander Zverev (+700), and Andy Murray (+750). Two-time US Open winner Novak Djokovic will miss this year’s tournament due to injury, along with former champion Stan Wawrinka and world’s No. 9 Kei Nishikori.
On the women’s side, Garbine Muguruza (+400) is the favorite, followed by Karolina Pliskova (+600) and Simona Halep (+800). Does Venus Williams (15/1) have one more run left in 2017? The two-time US Open Champion reached the finals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, but hasn’t captured a major championship since 2008.
