This game would’ve had even bigger ramifications two weeks ago, but a crushing defeat to Iowa State has taken the Oklahoma Sooners out of the national playoff picture, at least for now. However, a victory over Texas on Saturday and one against Oklahoma State on November 4, as well as a victory versus TCU on November 11, could put this team right back in the playoff picture. It starts with defeating the 3-2 Texas Longhorns.

The Texas Longhorns are trying to regain that mystique that made this team a national contender even 7or 8 years ago. That could start with a huge victory against Oklahoma this Saturday.
The Longhorns of turn to Sam Ehlinger as their primary quarterback, and the freshman has looked outstanding. He has thrown for 900 yards and five touchdowns in three games this season. He still makes some freshman mistakes, throwing for three interceptions and completing just 56.4 percent of his passes, but a game such as this is not been to be too big of a stage for this young man.
He has a couple of outstanding wide receivers, beginning with Collin Johnson and Reggie Hemphill-Mapps who each have 25 receptions the season. Johnson is a deep threat, recording 485 yards and has an outstanding 19.4 yards per catch average. Hemphill-Mapps is the guy that Ehlinger turns to when he’s in trouble, earning 261 yards and receiving. Armanti Foreman leads the team with three touchdown catches.
The Texas Longhorns defense has five interceptions the season, led by standout DeShon Elliot who has five. Elliott is an absolute blanket and covering receivers, and his opposite corner, Holton Hill, is no slouch either, recording two interceptions. Charles Omenihu and Naashon Hughes are tied for the team lead in sacks with two each.
Everything was looking like a smooth pathway toward a chance to get into the national playoffs when the Oklahoma Sooners went to Ohio State and won in week two of the season, but a huge loss to Iowa State last weekend has this team scrambling to get themselves back in the playoff hunt. They simply have to be Texas if they are going to be a contender, especially considering they are two weeks away from beginning the toughest part of their schedule where they have Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and TCU and three successive weekends. They simply cannot afford to lose to these Longhorns.
The Oklahoma Sonners offense is led by Baker Mayfield who is thrown for 1635 yards and 15 touchdowns. While his 74.6 completion percentage is ridiculously good, what really stands out is that he is thrown no interceptions and 134 attempts. That is just an unbelievable statistic, and is a testament to how good this young man really is.
Two running backs primarily share the duties. Trey Sermon has rushed for 373 yards and three touchdowns, while Abdul Adams has 372 yards and a score. The two play well together, with atoms being the game changer with a 10.6 yards per carry average. Expect him to see plenty of action in this game.
While a solid defense, this is not a big play one. Ogbonnia Okoronkwo has been an absolute beast and chasing after the quarterback, recording five sacks, but after him, the team has just seven other sacks, and Kenneth Mann has three of those. If these two don’t get pressure, no one else is going to. Parnell Motley leads the team with two interceptions, the only two picks that the Sooners have recorded this season.
Longhorns vs. Sooners Betting Lines
When you have a neutral site game like this it becomes a game of who is simply the better team. An eight-point spread would normally be too many and a Texas-Oklahoma game, but the Oklahoma Sooners have to feel like they may have seriously damaged their national title hopes, and they will want a little payback against their arch-rivals. Expect Oklahoma to win this game fairly easily, but don’t expect this to be a high-scoring affair.
My Pick: Oklahoma -8 (-110)
Totals: Under 64.5 (-105)
